    Cast boolit and magna port.

I have a SKS 8mm JDJ 14" Contender barrel that has J.D.s recommended Magna porting. Would a cast boolit with a gas check and powder coating work alright with the Magna porting without leading up the ports?

Was looking at the Lee 8mm Carabiner mold. My barrel will push 200 gr jacketed bullets at 2100-2200 fps., so the Carabiner boolit should be a good boolit for this barrel as long as the magna ports don't cause any problems.

I have a 6 1/2" Smith 29 that had been Magna-Ported. Plain based CBs result in a lead plated front sight ramp. I haven't fired it in years, but think a gas check might ease that problem. Or, I might have it cut to 5".

I have 2 Taurus Trackers in 41 and 44. I shoot nothing but my hand cast boolits in them. The front sight dirties up and there is a thin coat of lead in the ports. Nothing difficult; just one of the things I deal with when shooting the way I want. If I didn't want to clean 6 chambers I'd shoot a 5 shooter or a single shot. Just part of shooting guns and cartridges I like.
Not magnaported; just Taurusported!! Make a difference? I think not.

I Magna-ported a 358 Winchester. Did not affect accuracy. Ports did lead slightly and front sight ramp got dirty. Not a big problem. Did ruin it for paper patched bullets. Ports filled up with paper.

I had my Ruger Super Blackhawk ported. Some lead gets stuck on the front sight base, and the entire front sight gets dirty. All cleans up easily. The MagnaPorting made a big difference. You'll like it.

I have Magna-ported guns too. Lead builds up on and around the ports. I pick at it gently with the point of my pocket knife and it flakes right off. Easy.

I am of the opinion that if you are loosing lead before the bullet exits you are deforming and loosing accuracy however slight it is.

Maybe the accuracy slips a little but the guns still shoot better than I do. I am a handicap, pure and simple.

I have a Taurus tracker 6 inch in 357 magnum that I have shot thousands of plain base boolits through. The front sight gets dirty from burned powder but I have never noticed any lead in the ports or on the sight. I have to clean the powder residue off the sight periodically so I can see the red insert clearly.

Pc'd bullets will not lead up magna ports, muzzle breaks or cans.

12" 375 jdj, factory magna ported. Approx 500 275grn gc'd lfn, 70/30 lino/pure, sized .0377", lbt blue lube. I run a pipe cleaner thru the ports after every range session. I've yet to have even a speck of lead show up. Running plus/minus 1600fps, iirc. Hornady copper checks.

Good to go! That was what I needed to hear. And thanks to all of you for the information.

I don't like muzzle brakes or Magna Porting as a whole, but when I ordered this barrel years ago from JD, he strongly advised it be ported because of recoil. The reason for 8mm, was because back then, the lower-velocity expanding .30 caliber Nosler BT were not around yet, and 8mm bullets were made to perform at lower velocities.

This 8mm JDJ does pretty good with jacketed bullets, I have chronographed 150 gr bullets @ 2500fps, 170 gr. @ 2400fps and 200 at close to 2200fps.

The 270grn Hornady spire point, jacketed, runs around 2150fps, with a full charge of AA2520, in my gun. It literally knocked a 3 yr old Shiras Moose off his feet, back in 2011. Lights out.

I have a 3" Square butt S&W Model 36 38 special that i bought years ago that had been magnaported (!). I shoot the daylights out of it. Other than getting the front sight dirty, there are no issues.
I can't help but wonder why someone would do that. But it was that way when I bought it. Great shooter.

I'm sure Mag-na-port got a chuckle out of that request!

Had one of the first year special Super Blackhawks in 6 inch. Never noticed any lead in the ports. The porting really cuts the recoil on the SBH. It feels like a 357 Magnum.

Rush, that load has to be a handful! AA2520 is the powder that gets the most velocity from my 8mm JDJ also.

As far as recoil, the Contender with Pachmayr grips has never bothered me, as long I keep my left hand positioned correctly with all my fingers over the trigger guard. Don't want any finger on the left hand under the trigger guard, OUCH!

Agreed, it is a handful. Kinda funny though, and I have "several" chamberings in Contenders. The 375 just feels different. I can actually feel it coming straight rearward in hand, prior to any rise on the muzzle. Though stout, I actually enjoy shooting it.

SSK Larry actually recommends 2520 highly in the 375, and I've not been sorry for taking his advice. I am working on some cast loads, and so far, Varget is showing a lot of potential. Up to about 1650 fps thus far.

Yes that finger under the guard, especially on sandbags, is definitely not recommended.
