    first PC boolits.

so I decided to cast. thse are NOT mine, a good peep sent me these cast bullets to try out, so I figured I might as well go all in & start powder coating them instead of using lube.
    first try

second coat worked like a charm, I need to make them this good on the first coat.

now I need my dies so I can re-size.

does anyone know how to do it in one shot instead of 2 coats?

    using the black BBs method.

It pretty much depends on you humidity as we have discovered over the past year. In Ontario, you should not have excessive humidity like the swamp guys on here, but not as dry as over here in Arizona desert.

I BBDT with only one coat and they come out pretty smooth and 98% covered. My 1st tries looked something like yours. Practice. Practice.

I, as many on here, bake on non-stick alum foil. Easy clean-up. Last count I have baked over 900 boolits on one piece of foil!

Powder looks a bit thick. Are you tapping your hemostats on the side of the bowl to get rid of excess powder???

The key will be when you squeeze them thru the sizing die and how hard they go thru. I have never had any come off even when playing with 2 coats. The die will "move" the coating around and probably squeeze it into the grease grooves a bit...not big deal.

    I get around 0.002 thickness adder.....one coat.

You will just have to try it and see how they size/load/shoot.

    BBDT?

they are at .454-.455 , I NEED to re-size them, hoping to get things at one coat.

they looked fully covered like the second pic before it hits the oven, once in the over I was getting out like pic 1.

pic one = one coat baked

    pic 2 before baking

pic 3 was 2 coats. I am in Calif.

Yes......BBDT and ONE COAT! I do it all the time.

BBDT = BB Dry Tumble. Standard name we use all the time around here. Also called ASBBDT, but too much typing for me!

I know Ontario, CA. Have flown in and out of there many times and made many sales calls on customers there. You are wetter than Phoenix, but not a wet as Georgia or Houston!

This is how I get ONE COAT BBDT coverage:

Use a ZipLok screw-on #5 container or coolwhip.
Put 2-3 layers of black Airsoft BB's in bottom
    Put in 1/2 teaspoon powder
Put in 50-80 boolits - depending on cal and weight
    Swirl for 30-40 seconds
Shake hard up and down for 10 seconds (hence the SCREW-ON lid!!!!)
    Remove each with hemostats
There should not be a whole lot of powder left in the container! Add more if needed and coating is not happening but less is better.
Tap hemo on side to get rid of excess powder
    Place on NSAF-covered oven rack
Bake in preheated convection toaster oven for 10 min at 400F (start time AFTER all powder turns good and shiny)

Perfect coats.....almost as goos as my ESPC guns.....but not as smooth. But they shoot perfect.

Do they pass the hammer test?

What is your verified-by-oven-thermometer oven temp? DO NOT trust your oven dial!!!!!!!! Low temp can lead to poor baked coats.

Remember, this BBDT thing is based upon a lot of voodoo black magic and does not work for everyone everywhere everytime. ESPC works every time for me.....and most others.

    Keep practicing!

Those are some wild looking boolits.

So...not knowing anything about powder coating, do you just run them through a push through sizing die after you powder coat?

Yes. The powdercoating is very tough, yet conforming and will go through a push-thru sizing die with no problem. Sometimes I even have to double check the die to make sure I grabbed the right one, because they are so slippery and go through very easily even when sizing down a few thousandths.

jkcerda.... you'll find your "way" of doing it. Tumbling is a very individualized technique and there are many different "tricks" that people use to build up more static when they tumble. Not bad at all for a first try!! You'll get it!

Already thinking of trying a few things

anyond know how to mix two powders together and make it "swirl"? Or would I need 2 coats for that?

In my experiences with it, they don't actually mix. I always just get speckling, because it doesn't seem to mix evenly as it flows/cures.

This was just some leftover blue in the can when I sprayed the green:

Agree. Pixelated is what I get even with same brands of powders.

But it looks cool, I think!

But after all, these all end up down range!

Almost any colors will do that. I got em from all over... Ebay, HF, Smoke, other members on here...... Lately all I use are Smoke's powders though.
This is HF red, but I still had some blue and green in the jar when I sprayed em. I got the blue above from some Ebay ad, but it is Smoke's zombie green.

    test passed

picked up a Lyman lubrisizer (OLD) and used that to size the bullets. powder did scrape here & there.

The Lee push-thru dies seem to work the best, but you can use Lyman dies if they are smooth. Any die will benefit from a good polishing with some 800-1000 grit paper. Don't change the size of the die any more than you can avoid by getting too vigorous with the polishing, but get the starting chamfer and the inside to a nice mirror-slick finish and they'll size nicely!

They look ESPC'd blue (lightly) on top of green.

I spray red over the top of my green ones to make Zombie killers.
