358Win or 35Rem for new toy

I aquired a 1957 vintage 760 ,30-06, 16.125 inch barrel including muzzle break ! Needless to say, I ain't shooting that thing much, LOUD!!!!!! even with 10gr reddot loads.
So, I have wanted a 35 cal for long time, and I like pump guns. This one is D&T already so it will get a Lyman Alaskan 2.5 to go with a 1in14 20 inch green Mountain barrel in .35 bore. Question is 358Win or 35 Rem,, I have 35Rem dies and 60 rounds of brass. I formed a 35 Rem from a 308 yesterday, not too bad. Longer neck on the 358, but I am going to get a NOE 200RCBS clone and call it good. Whitetails and tin cans will be the game of choice but I think it could handle pigs just fine. Any difference in accuracy, powder consumption ect, for that bullet at 1700 to 2000 fps? Any difference for plinking loads with pistol boolits?? Really , any difference at all???
Also , any thoughts on the 30-06 bolt face and the 35Rem rim dia?
GoodSteel, do you chamber both calibers?? Ever done a 760??
Help me decide fore I go crazy

Gotta go watch football, be checking back tomorrow!

The 30-06 chamber probably will not clean up with either cartridge without setting the barrel back 3/8" or so. 35 Whelen would be the easiest conversion.

OP is using "1in14 20 inch green Mountain barrel in .35 bore"

I have both the 358Win. & 35 Rem. but not in a pump gun. For cast only I would do the 35 Rem. but the 358 can push jackets a liitle harder and it will have a better resale value. The .460" verse .473 rim should not be a problem.

In a Contender or a 336 the 35 Rem. is great but in something the size and weight of a 760 I would go with the 358 Win. The case isn't overly large to load down but you can best the 35 Rem by a fair amount if you want.

    358 win

brass is exponentially easier to deal with.

.358 Winchester in a pump gun, M-Tec is right about 35 Rem in 336 or Contender, my friend years ago had both and they were very good shooters. Too many projects in my head right now but would like to get a 336 in 30-30 rebored to .356 Winchester by JES to be able to use .308 rimless cases, or I'll just settle for finding a 336 in 35 Rem, one for sale locally I've had my eye on...

Since you are dealing with a pump that is configured to feed 30-06 case length cartridges already, I would recommend 35 Whelen which is a "35-06". Second choice would be to rebarrel it to 358 Win but the shorter case may case some feed issues. 35 Rem may require working on the bolt head in addition to have feed issues with an even shorter cartridge than the 358 Win.

Making a barrel for that rifle out of a blank is going to be quite a project. I've never tried to get the barrel extension off of one, don't know if they are welded on, soldered, or just torqued down hard. Also the other parts I believe are brazed on. Have fun!

A 35 whelen is where i would go if orginaly chambered in 30/06 all you have to do is rebore the orginal barrel to 35 cal and drop in a 35 Whelen reamer . I know of several people who have had it done to there 760's

If it was orginaly a 308 then i would go with the 358 win.
IF replacing the barrel instead of reboring it ? go with what every you want !

For me i would not even consider the 35 rem as a option !

Thanks for the thoughts, the original barrel is useless, someone cut it way too short to be useful, else I would happily have a 30-06 760 to go with the 300 Savage, but then it would have cost more than 125$
It takes a fitted tool to support the OD of the barrell extension , they are fairly thin. tool is started ,just got to get time to finish it up. Otherwise the barrel is just threaded into the extension, clamping the mounting piece between it and the shoulder. Sometime after 1957 the thread was changed to left hand, if anyone else is considering rebarreling a 760. There are extensions out there for the 7600, but not 760 due to the number of locking lugs.
It's a push feeder and the magazine establishes the feed relationship, I got 308 mags I use in my 300 Savage so got that covered.
I am leaning to 35Rem due to the fact that a 358 reamer will cleanup the 35Rem chamber if I change my mind down the road. Resale dosen't really matter to me on this, I hardly ever sell a gun. If I go 358 that is where I stay, not a bad place to be, but I kindawanna play with a 35Rem. And besides I got dies and no gun to go with them Have held on to them as I want a 35Rem 14 or 141 sometime.

That's good to know about the left hand threads! If I ever have to do one someday you just saved me a lot of grief. Let us know how the project turns out!

There is no difference between a 760 that shoots short action or long action cartridges, except the magazine. There is no aftermarket barrels for 760 Remingtons. I did find a gunsmith that has installed 700 barrels on 760s. A few years ago he quoted $350 to do this not including the barrel. Not sure if the bolt could be modified or not. The factory used different ones for the 30-06 and the .35 . Used bolts are scarce . New ones don't exist. I found the least expensive way to get a 35 caliber was to buy one already made. There is a market for short barrel 760s. They seem to bring a premium over standard length. I do have a barrel assembly 22" that will fit your rifle .270.

I have been thinkin again, probably not a good thing. I would be interested in that 270 to rebore. Pm on the way
Midway has a 35 Whelen barrel for mauser actions that I could rethread to fit his ,,under 100$ for the barrel ! Have been pondering a 35-06x2. That would be a 35 Whelen short chambered to 2 inch. Nice long neck and basically 35 Rem capacity with a standard case head and 308 formed with a pass thru the shortened Whelen die. I know, wildcat, no factory loads , no resale, ect. But would make me a nice long neck ,easy formed CHEAP 35 cal on his ol beater. 150$ gun,100$ barrel, 29$ dieset, some time in the shop.... maybe I should stop thinking and just rebore the 270 barrel and screw it on .

Well, got a Green mountain barrel chambered to 35Whelen last week with 35 Whelen Lee dies. Faced .496 off the base of both dies and swapped the expander out for a shorter one for the 35 Rem, then formed some brass. Federal once fired made a nice case with a consistent case mouth once trimmed to 2.000. Military TZ84 stuff will need a neck turning, good thing I got plenty of commercial stuff. After lots of measuring with a depth mic, I faced .460 off the breach face of the barrel and checked case fit to chamber. Snug and has a neck dia of .390 in the chamber. Just gotta get the lug wrench finished and break down the old barrel for some more measuring. Plan "B", if I flub the measuring, local gunsmith has a 35 Whelen reamer for "adjustment" if needed.
I ordered a NOE 360-230 to feed it, got another 308 mag off fleabay, and just found a set of 60s wood stocks on the swappin and sellin. Lucky on the stocks, had a dumb fit and clicked on the PB mold instead of the GC version , waitin to see if I can exchange. If not will be experimenting with the PB version.
This 35-06x2 makes a case with the Whelen neck and throat but 35Rem case capacity, standard 308 case head. I like efficient things, and have no desire to push the 230grain bullet any more than 2000fps EVER, and it is strictly a boolit shooter. The plan is 1700fps and deers and hogs galore

That's going to make an awesome hunting rifle. Hard-hitting with fast follow up shots. Any chance we could see some pics of the wildcat round and rifle?

I have to find a pic hosting site that my work server will "permit". Home internet is useless
I have taken some pics as I go along , to post later.
I have been looking into the possiability of just keeping the 230 PB mold, most of my shooting will be in the 1400FPS or less range anyway, and intending the full load at 1700 ish maybe van use a freechek on the PB bullets for hunting. ?????

Thanks , thats a NOE 360230 seated to cover the last lube groove. Can go a little longer but that's where I'm starting for hunting loads. When I saw that Boolit , I had to have one! Kind of how fishing lures are made to appeal to the fisherman, not the fish Hope the barrel likes it, but it was intended for the Whelen and does fit the throat fairly well. And I like it
Case will hold 38 grains of AA4064 (got 8 lbs) under that boolit and should push 2000 (my limit) out the 24 inch barrel. If I can get on the lathe tomorrow it will be together soon. Working on the stocks right now.
