    Wc 844

I recently picked up 5 lbs of WC844 from one of my local gun shops. My understanding is this a surplus version of H335. Can this be used as a direct replacement for the H335 ?

The load I have been using is 25 gr of H335 with Nosler 60 gr BT in a 223 with WSR primers. Results have been outstanding. Now for the loaded question...can I safely sub 25 gr of WC844 for the 25 gr of H335. Has anyone made a direct sub on these powders?

Start at the low end for H335 and work up to keep things safe. Surplus powders can vary in burn rates from lot to lot. That's what I have done.

The Army Data Sheet Technical Manual TM 43-0001-27 dated April of 1994 calls for the use of 26.1 grains of WC844 in the
    M855 (5.56/.223) load with a 62 Grain Ball.

Start a couple grains lower and work up a load.

Love it my Savage 10PC in 223. I have been using 60 grn Sierras, V-Maxes and 69 Sierras. Works fantastic. I have about 10lbs left.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll start at 24 gr and work up.

some of the first stuff I got was closer to 322 so start light and work up. The newer stuff is more like 335. there has been quite a few different lots. theres been new and pulldown and even some formulated to burn a bit hotter to light off tracers. So with all these variables its allways prudent with surplus to start with light loads and work up.

I run my loads as H335 data - 10% as a starting point for loading data in my rifles. Works fine in ARs.

I have about 7 pounds 14 ounces left. My lot seemed quite smoky and left more than the usual amount of residue. Different lots may act differently.

I remember that my load of 844 was pretty close to the load of H335 I was using, to get the same muzzle velocity.

I bought an 8 pounder about 10 years ago and it was just slightly faster then the lot of H335 I was working with at the time. Be prudent and work up your loads instead of doing a grain for grain substitution.
