32 Shooters, Powder Choice?

I have recently picked up two 32 Squirrels, one cap, one flint. I have powders already here, Holy 3F, Pyro, 777. I have never touched off a flint and have read some saying the need for FFFF in pan, others FFF in pan and bore. I have also read 20 grains of 777 with .310" Hornady and .015" patch. Maybe I have read/chased too much as it has become confused. I understand the what is best in your gun and all that, no manuals to be found anywhere and I know of the general rules of bore and charge. Yes I went to the in-line dark side many moons ago, still have dads .50 TC Hawken that I cherish and the memories of dad making that big stinky cloud and the smile on his face. I now have a grandson that is soon to learn the joy of stinky clouds and whacking stuff, and when he has learned well we will show him the Omega!

I shoot a 32 and I use 20 gr 3f . The manual that came with it says max 35gr 3f. It shoots great with 20gr. I cast a lee .311 rb with .10 patch. There are a few threads on this , use the advanced search it help me to gain some knowledge. 32's are easy to stick the ramrod, be careful. Happy shooting

Seems like you found the info you need. Now the only way to find out is to shoot. Each gun likes different things so apply what you have found out and try different loads to see.

I found a 38 spl case full of Old Eynsford FFFg and a .310" patched ball works well in my Dixie rifle. The Cherokee likes a .315 ball and the same powder charge. Don't load them too hot, the accuracy goes away and they foul out quickly. Load down to 10 grains of powder for 22LR speed and won't blow up squirrels. Full loads get messy.

I second the Old Eynsford powder in fffg. Goex fffg works fine but the fouling is easier to manage with the OE. I prime with Goex ffffg or Swiss Nul-B.
My Green Mountain barrel works best with a .319 ball and ticking patches.

not a .32 but my new-to-me .36 jack garner southern flinter squirrel rifle, 42" straight barrel.

25 grains of swiss 3f and my own cast .350 balls does the trick.

FWIW, I've been using the same powder in my rocklock's primer pan as the main charge (FFFg Holy Black), for over 20 years, w/o issue - the K.I.S.S. principle.

same here - 3f down the tube and in the pan for my .36 and .45 flinters.

i won't ever again use bp "substitutes" - i see no advantage to them at all.

My .32 Dixie Squirrel always made good groups using 20 gr of 3 fg Swiss powder but needed a damp patch ran down the bore after 3-4 shots. About 1 1/2 yrs back I got ahold of some of the 3fg Olde Eynsford powder from Goex. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that it will give me around 10 - 11 shots before the fouling is an issue. If you have the chance give it a try ... cheaper than swiss and seems to leave a softer / moister fouling in the bore.

My .32 Crockett likes 20 to 30 grains of 3F Goex or Jacks Battle Powder; 20 for squirrels and 30 for power. I'll see (when it arrives) if the new .32 flinter follows suit.
