    4759

Shot the Remington 700 VS chambered in 308 Winchester. Tried four powders 4759, n133, Varget and 2400. Velocity is about 2000fps for each load. Bullet is the Lee 160 gr CE Harris design sized to .311 to fit throat of rifle.

Center target is where I aimed for first two fowling shots. Then I fired one 10 shot group for each powder tried.

    4759 performed best

Thanks for sharing this with us, as a matter of fact I was just on Gunbot and was looking at the 4759 powder and thinking of trying it out. I think after what you have posted here, I will definitely give it a go.

Was this at 100 yards? Get your 4759 while you still can. It is discontinued at year's end.

I cleaned rifle between each group. Lee Alox was used as lube, wolf LR primers, Concentric IMI neck turned brass from same lot.

    Yes...shot @ 100yards

Good shooting! Wish I could do that....that's why I saved a copy of your picture. Hope you don't mind me stealing your loads. I stopped developing loads in my .308 at least 10 years ago because I had a good plinkering load that was cheap. Thats all I wanted then. Now I'd like to shoot pretty groups like you. After finishing some other boolit projects, I hope to get back to it. Thanks for posting your results!

I think your gun and that boolit really REALLY like that 4759 load.

    Congrats on a fine shooter!

My Remington has a larger than minimum SAAMI spec chamber. Its more like the larger 7.62 NATO dimensions with longer .150 lead and a diameter of .3115. I sized my bullets to .311 and seated long so that bullet is shoved deep into rifling when chambered. After sizing I hand dipped bullets in liquid Alox, then set bullets on their bases, on wax paper to dry overnight. I flared cases very slightly with Lyman M die (short version) then seated bullets using NO CRIMP. Choose a seater that does not size down bullet smaller when seating bullet. I use the Hornaday inline 308 seater.

Bullet fit is most important for great accuracy. Allways size your bullets a tad smaller (-.0001-.0005) than lead or throat diameter. The lead is freebore area in chamber just ahead of neck area, usually about .050-.150 in length and just before taper into rifling. A pound cast works verygood to find out measurement.

The Lyman 314299 also shoots pretty good

Scope Mirage (blurry image) gets pretty bad after about Ten shots when barrel gets hot. This may have contributed to remaining larger groups. The 4759 load was the first group fired when barrel was cooler.

Fine shooting. Just curious if you used a filler with these loads? I use a lot of 4759 in 35 whelen and really like it.

I used no filler. Each charge was hand weighed. Linotype alloy

detox - I have a 700 VS .308 that I purchased new more than twenty years ago. I have been experimenting with some 4759 loads and a 200 grain Eagan wheelweight bullet. I have more groups to fire, but it looks like my 4759 load is slightly more accurate than the 5744 and H4895 loads, though all shoot well. I've had best results with a .311" bullet in most .30 caliber rifles, but my 700 VS does noticeably better with a .310" bullet.

    Detox,
In my 700VS 308 I run 15 gr 2400 under a 31141. On a good day with my mouth held right it will group7/8" to 1". With 20 gr 4759 the vel was chrono at 1860 fps. and groups were7/8" to 1 3/16". Those groups were at 100 yards. Those loads were in R/P cases, Win Primers, bullets sized .310 and 2.67 OAL. If you can find one a Lyman 311335 over 22 gr of 4759 also produces some nice small groups.

    waco

I'm betting on 2100-2200 fps or thereabouts with 24 grains

    Very good shooting indeed!

The leade should not be confused with the throat. The leade is that portion of the barrel where the rifling originates to that point where it reaches full height. The throat or freebore, if present, is always between the end of the chamber neck and the leade. This has no rifling and is often the same size or larger than groove diameter of the barrel.

This is why I DO NOT want to try 4759. I got a feeling it'll shoot well but now that it's discontinued it'll be nothing more than a memory soon.

I was lucky enough to find an. 8 lb keg awhile back. I'd still like to find more. It works real well in the .308 Dean.
