    bhn for powder coated boolits

I have some 430gr .460 boolits that I was going to remelt because they were slightly under sized but now that I can powder coat them they are no longer going to be remelted. I was going to heat treat them for shooting in my 45-70 at 1650fps... Right now they are about 11 to 12 bhn so here is my question...

Should I heat treat them before powder coating for shooting at that fps? does the powder coat make it to where I can shoot at 12 bhn boolit with a gas check at that fps?

I know a few people will leave their bullets in for 1 hour at 400 (sometimes when curing, sometimes after) and then water quench afterwards to get a harder alloy. Also I know that the PC itself is about 26BHN but is so thin that I'm not sure how much leway it allows you with hardness of your actual bullet. Question, you say these are undersized. Are they under actual groove diameter? If so by how much?

leave their bullets in for 1 hour at 400 then drop them in cold water. You do need As in the alloy. Your alloy & powder selection will determine if it will work at that fps, if GC will be needed. Personally, I recycle any that are sub standard - just too easy to do. I don't depend on 'tricks' to make them right. If you have several hundred you might try it on a few. Actually I use my Lee sizer for QC - if it goes too easy and doesn't get sized, recycle.
    Whatever!

I ran them all through my 460 sizer and this batch for some reason came out around .458 (my groove diameter is .4575) I usually toss everything back that doesnt clearly hit the driving bands all the way around when I put them through the sizing die. They will still work in the 45-70, they were just not up to my standards. I will try the heat treating while baking and water quench..
