    HELP! Toaster Oven Meltdown

Or should I say pc boolit meltdown. My recently acquired yard sale convection toaster oven will no longer stop heating when the required temp is reached. Is this fixable? I just finished making custom trays for it and don't want to start over. Any toaster oven mechanics out there? I'm pretty good at fixing stuff but I know nothing about these things. Could it be a stuck thermostat??? HELP!!!

You could always make a pid controller for it. I made one for my pot that has a receptical not it so I can use it on my oven or any other heating device.

get a PID? got mine from frozone here. Should have gotten additional thermocouples.

I consider straightwiring my convection oven to the elements, and then using a PID to run it, because quite frankly, the internal thermostat sucks so much it's not funny anyway.

    "What's a PID?"

    proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller

This is a controller that turns on and off the heating elements of a device.
Mostly used on a lead melting pot or a lub-a-sizer to control the temperature.

Frozone makes them and has kits available.

Are your custom trays filling the oven so completely that they are stopping air circulation and messing with the thermostat function?

do consider cost of better oven with cost of PID or another thermocouple for PID, though if all you need is a new thermocouple you probably already have the PID

Those cheeeeeeep bi-metallic thermostats burn out pretty regularly. I would say can it and get another one of higher quality (new!). I went down the road of "used junk" and had horrible problems with melted and cold boolits.

Your trays (in a fan convection oven) MUST not block the airflow around the all the edges. You cannot just use solid plates. You must make wire racks like the originals that at lease have an inch of space around the front/back/sides to allow air flow.

Good luck. Check some of the fine convection ovens at many of the discount big boxes. Some on here are VERY lucky to have non-convection ovens that give them satisfactory results. That in not the norm. And wasting money buying used junk and finding out is does not work...........well you know how that is.

Yeah I got lucky, measured with a thermometer and left the dial right there.
This one has heating elements above and below, maybe that's how it delivers
a consistent heat. They both come on all the time, maybe that's why it was
    in the thrift store!

The top elements are for TOAST/BROIL only. The should not be on if you are baking. If you oven does not have a know to select all those different types of cooking, you DO have a problme! it's just a metal box with cal-rods in it. No control.

If you want good boolits with minimum headaches, but a NEW convection oven!

When you first turn it on they might both be on for a short while then oven should cycle top bottom top bottom so on to keep temp somewhat even on bake. Toast would be both and broil would be the top.
Check your settings on the oven and make sure it is where you think it is (Bake) . I have trouble seeing it some times.
What happens when you turn the temp back a little?

    Is it like this one?

It was my first one and I later picked up a larger one a while back. Still works fine but I have no use for it any longer.

Similar to that one, I can get details or a pic.
Thermostat seems to work fine as the measured temp at this setting
is consistent at 400F, that's using my lead thermometer an inch or so
above the tray. The elements switch on & off during the bake.
The coating comes out great so I have no complaints!
