    10 MM in a 1911

    OK I just finished "Making" a 38 Super 1911
OK I just put togeather the slide , barrel and the rest of the slide parts for a complete upper and a couple mag's for my 1911 70 Series

So tonight I was looking in my parts box for a spring.....( junk box )
    When I found a 1911 - 10 MM barrel and bushing

No clue when I picked this up
But it looks new or darn close

    But my question is
Will mid range 10 MM loads hurt my frame ?

As I have 10 MM brass and dies

I just don't want to mess up one of my frames

mid range loads should be no issue, and I wouldn't worry about any frame on any 1911 unless it's aluminum.

My old 10MM Dan Wesson CBOB was a laser it was so accurate, and one of the ones that got away which I regret.

Let us know how it turns out and get some pics

I'm sure that mid power loads will not cause any issues for a steel frame and I think that it would be a fun project.

Take it easy on the loads and it should be fine. Main cause of concern would be a non-ramped barrel that lacks full case support. Same problem the colt delta elite has. Personally, I wouldn't own one unless it's ramped and supported, don't wanna have to worry about blowing a case. I can almost match midrange loads in 45 with light boolits and certain powders.

Full power loads are OK in 1911s - the Delta Elite model was (is?) sold in this
cartridge. Can't see where this would be a problem.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

Actually it's well documented that full house loads are not good in the delta. Boutique ammo shops warn against the use of these loads in unsupported chambers.

I have a Fusion long slide custom and have ran some unreasonably hot handloads through it over the years. It's still drum-tight and ball-bearing smooth. Of course, it's got a fully supported, ramped barrel. Don't worry about your frame.

I'm not familiar with Underwood ammo, it looks like the warning only applies to their 10 mm ammo. Colt currently lists a 10 mm 1911, so if Remington, Winchester, etc sells 10 mm ammo then SAMMI should have called it safe for the consumer.

The commercial 10mm is a joke compared to the original specs. More like 40+p. Even most load data doesn't meet original 10mm specs. 200grs at 1200 was original Norma load. Now warm commercial stuff is like 180 at 1150+/-. The original CIP load would be about saami max load. there is what is known as the FBI load, 180gr at 950+/-. I can do that in .40s&w. There's plenty written about the 10mm and the evolution of .40s&w and the colt delta 1911's.

From what I recall the problem with the Delta Elite was cracking of the frame near the slide stop square opening, which was solved by opening the top of the square.

I do know the 10mm is unbelievably accurate. I was firing my Glock 20 recently and thought the second shot had missed the entire target at 10 yds. I am a better shot than that. Third shot I saw the target paper wiggle a tad. I realized it was three bullets in one hole! two more shots and the measured group was .5", which given the .4" diameter of the bullet, I call that a one hole group. My shooting parter had a 586 and couldn't shoot that good.

Underwood makes GREAT ammo and for the 10MM they really load it like a 10MM, not down loaded to 40 SW specs like most commercial 10MM ammo.

I have a Colt Delta Elite and I even contacted Colt on that issue on the frame cracking because my DE is from 1991. The rep said the reason frames cracked was because they we built on a .45 receiver. As you know the .45 is a much lower recoil. These problems were evident on the 1987-1989 and they fixed the problem. It was almost rare for it to happen after that.

1200 FPS is a standard 10mm. Some companies don't even get past 1000 (look at federal hydra shok). Remington UMC is 1150. While underwood states that it should only be used in ramped barrels. I think they did it for liability than not having it be able to do it. Underwood makes a DE safe round (out of stock for the longest time) but the FPS is 60 fps slower than the non safe. its not like its 100 or more of a difference. I think they don't want to have a lawsuit in the event someone cracked their frame with their ammo, not that the gun couldn't handle it.

OK I will have to build up another slide and barrel ....complete upper

I have been using up a bunch of miss matched parts for the uppers
    So I Dura Coated the 9 mm , 400 Corbond , 40 S&W and 38 Super Slides
I used a Dark Gray that sort of looks like Parkerized

Never had a 45 ACP slide made up yeat eirther to match the Dura Coated frame

So I will do both at the same time , when I get everything working right

Ive got one of the AMT/IAI longslide 10 mm. The recoil spring is from a mack truck but it is a good shooter.

    Groo here
    I have a "few" 10mm's.
One trick is to use a flat bottom ejector plate and a heaver main spring.
This will reduce the LB needed in the recoil spring.
All mine are ramped barrels and like things hot.
One will not work with Check ammo at all 180gr at 1000fps,
The bad one is the officers 10mm aka Hammer of Thor...

I expect you are talking about a reduced radius firing pin stop, like from EGW.
