    Question Your favorite/accurate 358477 load

Everyone that has written talks about their great loads with this boolit.

I have shot it in my Contender (no throat so it get the bullet straight on), Blackhawk, Model 66 and now my GP100.

    Powders I have tried, PS11, AA#5, HS7, 2400, WC820(110 speed).

Are you loading yours mild or wild to get the GREAT performance I keep reading about?

Heck, I'm gong to 4759 next!

So far (1 week and about 250 rounds) the GP100 likes the Remington SJHP semi coated bullet in front of 12.0 of "new" 2400!

6.0 gr Unique in the 38 Spec IIRC. Works for me.

+1 to Bret, I've used 5.0-6.0 x Unique for many years and many jackrabbits in 38 Special. I haven't done a whole lot of 357 Magnum work with it, but I've run it well past 1000 FPS with good accuracy and zero leading using unrecalled loads of Unique, Herco, and 2400.

I use the #358477 extensively in a Rossi-Puma .38 spl levergun, ahead of 14 grains of 2400 in .38 spl cases. Accuracy is very good (as leverguns go) and the bullet has zipped through a 120+ kg hog breaking both shoulders and I never found it. Distance was less than 40 paces.
I use it in a 10" TC Contender with good results (better with #358429); also good in an 8 3/8" S&W 686 kicked by 15 grains of 2400,
Excellent in a S&W K-38 with 4.1 grains of old Unique.
Lube is tallow + beeswax + carnaúba wax + chassis grease. Sticky but works.

In .357 Magnum I use 14.5 grains of 2400 with the 150 grain 358477 for a little over 1400 fps. This load shoots great in my .357 Mag revolvers, but not worth a hoot in my Marlin levergun (I suspect that it's undersized for the Marlin bore).

In .38 Special I generally use 5.4 grains of Unique with the 150 grain 358477 for about 950 fps.

The TC barrel is a lot different than a revolver barrel. Velocities are quite higher in the TC. In my 10" TC barrel the best load for 358477 is 6 gr of Unique in WW cases with a Federal small pistol promer. Velocity is 1213 fps (SD 14, ES 46 for 10 shots) and it groups into 2.5" at 50 yards. This is with bullets cast of ACWWs. At 6.8 gr velocity is right at 1300 fps but accuracy opens to 3" groups. Had an old can of Bluedot and 10.8 gr of it would push 358477 right at 1600 fps with 3" accuracy at 50 yards but the new Bluedot I've got shooots improved cylinder at that velocity. IN THE TC ONLY; one might get away with a wad under the bullet and hold accuracy a little higher. I just accepted the 6/Unique/1213 fps as a very good medium load in the TC. For magnum performance I went with 358156 GC over 15.5 gr H4227 for 1513 fps and the same 2.5" groups at 50 yards. My TC had a 2.5X scope on it. I was going to try AA7 and AA9 but never got around to it before I traded the 10" barrel off. Nothing wrong with the .357 TC just that I never used it other than an occasional rabbit shoot and I prefer the .22 Hornet or .32 H&R TC barrels for that or a Ruger Security Six with 6" barrel if i want to use a .357.

Lyman's 358477 is my very favorate bullet which casts out for me at 147grains and use for everything, even 9mm. Yes, 9mm Luger, sized to .356 for my Ruger P89! My favorate powder is Blue Dot, for which I use 6 grains in 9mm, 8 grains in 38spl, and 12grains for 357Mag. I also use 16 grains of Blue Dot with 429421 in my 44 Mag.

I just bought a Lyman 3rd Edition cast bullet reloading manual. I was surprised they did not have this bullet in the .38 SPL section. I was going to try some 150gr SWC with some Unique, but not having any load data brings that notion to a abrupt halt. Can someone here post the starting load through max load for me with this bullet and Unique?. I appreciate it greatly thanks in advance.

I checked Lyman's 46th, 47th, and 48th reloading manuals, and didn't find anything either. In the 45th addition, there is another plain base bullet, 358430, that is the same nominal weight, 150 grains, as 358477. The starting load for this bullet is 3.5 grains of Unique, giving 608 fps and a maximum load of 5.5 grains of Unique giving 940 fps. Hope this is some help to you.

5.4 Unique is supposed to be a classic load for this bullet....
