    Hodgdon h870

Went to a local shop today and picked up a pound of Hodgdon H870 for 6 bucks thought I got a deal. Now I don't really see any load information so I was wondering if anybody has any ideas.

I have used it in a 7mm mag with heavy bullets with good results. Should do about the same in a 300 mag too.
I have gotten the most use from it in a 45/70 using it as a main charge in duplex loading.
I shot the Quiggley match using the duplex load and did quite well. Extream velocity spreads were in the teens.
I use 60gn weight and 10% kicker charge of powder in burn rate between 2400 and 4198 then top with packing popcorn and lightly compress with the boolit. Gives about 1400 fps with 500gn ish boolits.

Any of the 30 cal magnums with really heavy bullets. Find an old reloading manual for data.

It should be really close to AA 8700 . They have cast bullet loads for it in alot of 30 cal calibers in there free paperback manuals

870 is gone and has been replaced with H869 (same data). It is the ONLY poweder that works well in my 22-06 (yes 22). Will push a 70 gr TSX at 3600 with sub MOA to at least 400.
It also works well with heavy cast boolits in cartridges it is "too slow" for. Have had fine results in the 30-06 with 220 gr NEIs and the case filled to the bottom of neck. Yup lots of unburned powder but the rifle doesn't seem to care.

Best shooting powder in my 7mm Mag. It used to be the slowest powder available and was good for overbore cartridges.

Yes, my favorite 7mm Mag powder with 160gr Noslers. I've still got many pounds that I bought years ago. it's double base so it keeps well.

Used to use it in the 25-06. Same data now for some of the surplus 20mm cannon powders? I saw that and bought some of the surplus to use in the 25 Krag AI I'm building. Old Serria manuals, old Hodgon manuals, and I think Speer manuals have data.

It is really too slow for all the cartridges mentioned with jacketed bullets. It is a 30-378, RUM or STW level powder like RETUMBO. In the 25-06 and 7 mm remmag, 4350 and 4831 burn rate powders will give better velocity. In the 6.5x55 W760 is hard to beat.
You may get good accuracy but run it through a chronograph and you'll see.
I use it in the 244 H&H and 22-06 which are really overbore cartridges even in today's world.
The 25-06 hasn't been overbore since 4831 surplus appeared when it was still a wildcat. The Hodgdon website shows no loads in the 25-06 for H869.
The 7mm remmeg was never overbore as it came out after slow burning powders were available. Until you get to a 175 gr bullet, H869 shows no advantage, and with today's super bullets, who would ever use a 175 gr bullet in a 7mm remmag ?
The 6.5x55 has never been overbore and 4831 is at the top end for it with heavy bullets, which again are no longer needed.

Well, I still have a couple three boxes of 7mm 175s and I'd just as soon load them up in my 7mm mag with $10/lb powder. Same kinda deal with my Swede. I sure like shooting twice as much for half as much!

What kind of loading are you using in the 6.5X55? Seems I can use them with the 6.5X57 too. at least with the 140 grain bullets. Barrel is too rough for boolits.

Someone gave me two bottles of AA's 8700, 8 lb bottles that is, and I still had part of a jug of WC 870 from long, long ago.
