    Micrometer

So yesterday at a garage sale I found a full set of micrometers which has 5 different sizes of micrometers. I was looking at them because I wanted a small one for measuring boolits and for gas check material. Luckily, the person selling it didn't kno what he had. I gave him $25 for the full set! So now I'm playing with the micrometers but I have no idea how to read it. Can someone point main the right direction?
    Respectfully,

Perfect thank you. Found out my micrometers are the vernier type.

What brand? Does the one inch zero properly? Did you get gage blocks or rods with
the larger than one inch ones? Heck of a deal if they are in good condition.

If you are lucky he didn't think they were C clamps and used them as such. If they didn't come with gages, feeler gages will work for 1" Mic.

    Bill,

I got a set of six micrometers. The set was missing the gage blocks but it does have the little wrench to adjust them I guess. I'm hoping I can find some of those blocks. Yes the 1-inch seems to work perfectly. The brand is Scherr-Turmico or something like that. I'm at work now and can't remember exactly right. They seem to be in very good condition. I don't know much about micrometers but from what I can tell they are vernier micrometers which I think means they can gauge something to .0001 of an inch....I think.

A very good brand of micrometer. Comparable to Starret.

    look on the manufacturer's website

I got a Starrett micrometer from my FIL's stuff with no instructions, and a friend got one of another brand from his father's stuff (don't remember the brand). The website for both brands had instructions for how to use and read them.

I remember googling how to use a micrometer and found a YOutube video that showed exactly how to do it.

Great deal, good mics! But for serious use of the larger mics you really do need the gage
blocks. For not so serious work, they are probably close enough if nobody has used
    them for C-clamps.

If the zero to 1 doesn't zero perfectly, you can reset it with the little spanner.

The military bought lots of that brand in wood flat boxes. I have the 0 to 6" set with standards. They are good quality if not abused.
