    462560, any still using it?

I have read beagle's article over on castpics, and was wondering if anyone else is using this mold? I picked one up sometime back, and have cast a few but never really shot any. I decided that it needed some serious consideration the other day as I am considering building a 458x2" bolt gun. But when casting I realized that the nose only casts at .4465-.447. This is kind of loose in my 45-70 barrel. Otherwise it casts great, bands measure at .461-.462 from WW, and the checks fit nice and snug. Should I try to lap just the nose to get it up in size a bit? Thanks, Billy

Love casting small boolits, let me know if you have one that I don't that you would part with!

I have one. I shoot those out of my Gibbs .45-70 bolt rifle.

    Billy,

What? Don't you love the tiny ones? I'm here to tell you that that puppy doesn't qualify as a small boolit. At least not in my book.

I have one of those moulds too. I removed the gas check portion of the mould knowing I would never need a check on a boolit that heavy.

All I can tell you really is to try it first. Might work just fine. That boolit nose has a lot more structual integrity than a long 7mm or 30 caliber. Never know.

I'm gonna give it a shot Cat, I got a few loaded up to try.

I gotta say, I know it's not a small boolit and I cringe everytime I drop one. I mean, that's like 10 of my normal ones in one boolit! I gotta try though. Of course, a few jolts from that and a max load may just send me crawling back to my small bores. But at least I can say I tried!

Those #462560s are furnace-drainers, no two ways about it! I have one, and while the gas checks are pretty much superfluous at 45-70 speeds I haven't altered the mould.

My cavity produces the nose portion at .448 and a skoash, which gives a draggy slip-fit in my Ruger #1's .449" bore. It shoots very well at 1100 FPS in spite of the 1-20" twist in the Ruger, and stays nose-forward to 200 yards--the longest range I've put it on paper at going any velocity. At 1300 FPS, it pushes back right smartly....at 1500 FPS my eyes water and my shoulders meet one another in that 7-1/4# platform. In my younger days, I enjoyed such nonsense--now at 57, I endure such things, and their frequency & repetition diminish just a bit.

What a hunting boolit, though! Cast it as a Bruce B Softpoint, and that critter in a 45-70 could take on lined-up Ice Age megafauna.
I don't paint bullets. I like Black Rifle Coffee. Sacred cows are always fair game. California is to the United States what Syria is to Russia and North Korea is to China/South Korea/Japan--a Hermit Kingdom detached from the real world and led by delusional maniacs, an economic and social basket case sustained by "foreign" aid so as to not lose military bases.

I had mine HP'd, casts at 520 grains now out of my 50/50 alloy. I haven't tried them from my Marlin Cowboy yet, but they shoot very well at 1,400 fps. from my brothers Guide Gun.

I don't have that mould. Wanted one before. It then I gave up on my dream of hunting mountains. Short of Everest I can't see anything needing to be shot with that much lead.

About the onliest firearms I really need are the two revolvers my wife and I have, a pump 12 gauge and my little Cricket rifle I hunt 'coons with. The rest are just expensive toys.

'Bout the only time I break out that shoulder fired, stock mounted Howitzer is when somebody comes over and goes to oogling those huge loads for the Gibbs. If I get a positive response to "Wanna shoot it?", we'll take it up to the range and beat the snot out of ourselves a few times.

Yeah, there is something aout having someone get a bit of reality about recoil.
I get all the recoil I want in my Marlin 45-70 from 420 gr bullets in the 1800 fps range. It takes a bit of getting used to before I want more than 10 at a time.

I can only imagine how fast that mould empties a pot. My 6 can 460420 group buy mould drains my 22 pound RCBS right quick like.

I'm still messing with mine in the .45/70 and also the .458 X 2. In fact, when I had my .458 X 2 made, I sent dummies loaded with the 462560 as a guide for chambering.

My friend in VT killed several steers for a friend that he had go wild on him several summers back. At 350 pounds, he got complete penetration through the shoulders with the solid version of the 462560.

Several thoughts on the .458 X 2. It's a hassle. You need to neck ream to thin the case mouth or you'll get blackening of the case as the neck is too thick. Choose your action carefully as they're a bear to get to feed right. Lastly, the case capacity with long bullets like the 462560 severely limit your powder space with powder like 3031.

    But, it's a fun gun to shoot./beagle

    This pic:

Is that boolit from my mould, and the pot was full when I started. One hundred fourteen if memory serves. And that was with throwing the sprues back in too!

Lyman says to use the 424 top punch which also fits the Keith boolit. Nice mepat. Should hit like the hammer of Thor.

I shot some once out of my .458 Win Mag Ruger Number 1 at 2200 FPS and all I can say was that I was glad when that batch was gone. Even with a sissy pad, it sure got my attention./beagle

Ive got one of those 462560 molds --- I use it for cast loads in a lot of my 45 rifle guns --- So far its been one of the best cast lead bullets out of me 460-Styr --- I did lap out the nose so it bore rides properly though --- so it is not completely original --- and yes I use the checks on it

Its better for accuracy then the 457658 --- at least in my results but as I say --- I fixed the nose so it would be large enough to bore ride
