If it had a folding buttstock it could almost be a tactical mares leg. That would actually make it uglier, which is no small feat.
I understand the concept, I just don't get the why? This is a solution looking for a problem.

I first saw this referenced on SurvivalBlog.com.

It is a functional gun. Someone will buy that gun. It's going to make it harder to pass ridiculous "assault weapon" laws unless they come out and say, 'Black scares us!' And that sounds racist."
    An interesting idea.

I saw this gun at the show and I had to chuckle. However Mossberg's new mode of design is "Modular".

They had a table setup with all kinds of piece parts laying there.

You could configure any Mossberg shotgun about 10 different ways with no tools , everything just snaps on and off. It was pretty cool actually, and they had the best flashlight integrated into a foreend of any one I saw at the show, and is something I want for my M500 for a house gun..

Alot of those parts go onto the levergun as well.

It may offend some but it is a way for them to increase their customer base and really it doesn't hurt anything. It just gives the consumer more choices.

One thing I know about customers is that if you make something, people always seem to want something just slightly different. Mossberg's modularity strategy covers more ground, and thus attracts more buyers... Good business!

Their response to the Ruger Gunsite Carbine is a bolt action .223 carbine that uses AR mags. It was nicely made (not exceptional mind you) but worthy of the price they are asking. I'm sure they will sell many of them. Ruger chose not to go into this market.

Scifijim: We listened to Rawls' book on tape on the way to and from the show.

It is pretty informative, and has a serious amount of info in one spot. Basically 6 full hours of information.

I was so impressed,,,, I bought the book off Ebay as soon as I got home!

"How to survive the End of the World as we know it"

I see it as a "must have" reference volumn, and for $10 you can't hardly beat it.

He uses the term "When the Schummer hits the fan" frequently. Sounds like he is not a big fan of Chuck Schummer.

I like their idea of a Bolt action 223 using AR Mags. I'd prefer a 1-8 or 1-7 twist barrel to handle heavier bullets (69-77gr) for long range prone matches/deer hunting.

The current bolt rifle is setup with a 1-9 which will handle 50-62gr bullets well out to 300 yards though.

+1 with Bruce... I own an ar-15, but more as a memory of my service. I don't care to have that lever gun. And won't ever buy one.

Has anyone actually handled one or is it just a sense of aesthetics that is offended?

Just looking at it, tell me I don't need to handle it to decide if it will fit my use for a rifle.

I'm usually one to give anything a chance, but I cannot get past the look of it.

I get the idea that they want to capture the younger market, but why do they figure this is the way? I cannot see too many 20 something hunters buying one.

The appeal? It's like wanting to date the fat chick's ugly friend.

Maybe I just like pushing people's buttons. It would be fun at the range. The old guys would look look offended and think that you had lost your mind. The young tacticool set would wonder what the new toy was until they realized it was a lever gun, then they would look offended and think that you had lost your mind.
Hmm. if I find a good deal on one I may just pick it up.
