    Small Game 99 Savage

Any yall worked up small game loads for 99's?
32-20 type loads for the .300Savage and .308Win lever actions seem like a natural.
.28 cal cast small game loads in the 7-08 seems like they could be ideal.
Thought I'd ask and see what others may have tried.

I have a 99 from 1936 in 30-30. I cast 311316, 115 gr. size .310 and load for plinking. It works very well in the old Savage. I don't have any loaded now and can't remember the charge.

I loaded 311359 + 7 grs. Unique for my .300 back in 1976. It will knock the tree rats off the tallest tree.

8 grains herco under a 311-419 in a 300 works very well, I have also used 8 grains of unique with a 311-245 93 grain PB RN. Either load is fine for short range plinking or small game. Killed a number of jack rabbits with the 311=419, but have had no chance to try the PB boolit.

    I've tried a few loads in my 1935 vintage 99 carbine (20" w/barrel band) in 30-30. My 38-55 gets the 37583 (150gr) over 4gr Universal.

For 30cal, try the Lyman 311008 or Lee 311-100-2R. If you need to go faster, try the 311316 or Lee soup can with GCs.

BTW, the Lee C309-150F was a good fit and shot very well from my .300 when I tried it.

I used to use 358156 over Unique in 358 WCF savage and I had a FP 180 grain SEACO mold that did pretty good also - today I'd probably look at trailboss about 10-14 grains to find something.

My current small game rifle (aside from the M2 Springfield and the Martini 12/15) is an 1899H Savage in .22 Hi Power. The Lyman 60gr. #228367 driven by 6gr. Unique (gasp, not that dirty stuff again!), sized .229", is good for sub-inch groups at 50 yds with a tang sight rear and bead front sight. Squirrels, groundhogs (at relatively close range) and the odd stupid fox have fallen to it and quake in their boots when they see me coming with that rifle. I really, really want to get a turkey in the sights of that rifle one fall day. I might add another grain or two of powder for that particular social occasion.
