I checkered one stock. That is way I pay someone else to do it.

I decided the checkering was as good as I was going to get it. Sanded to 1000grit and did the first coat of 50/50 reduced BLO.

I really should have filled in the tiny gap in the left grip, but since this is a practice set I decided to let it go.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

I finally got around to installing the grips. Two coats of reduced BLO and 5 coats of strait BLO.
There’s a few rows that aren’t straight on the checkering but overall I’m very happy with it.
Thanks to all for all the tips!
They turned out really nice. Good job.
What a great project.
The wood looks like what you'd find on a Rolls Royce dash.
The diamonds look sharp enough to grip you as good as you grip them.

OK People. Enough of this idle chit-chat.
This ain't your Grandma's sewing circle.
EVERYONE!
Back to your oars. The Captain wants to waterski.
You did good, those grips are beautiful!
Love that finish.
Thanks fellas. I know there are those who make fine works of art. But as much as a feeble attempt this was (going cross eyed and not even getting all the lines straight), I actually enjoyed it!
Looks perfect to my old eyes. I did a rifle stock back in the mid 80’s when I could half see and was kind of more patient. Learned about checkering, got all the tools, turned out good. The imperfections only mean that someone did this with care and patience. Take a look at an old Belgium Browning. You will see mistakes, that is Clasic, they did them one at a time. You will come to appreciate that work, when you pick up one that’s been hand carved vs one that was stamped or laser cut.
