    308 Win MouseFarts

Hay all, i dont have a mold for a 308 bullet but i got to thinking... One of my hesitations of hunting varmints w/ a subsonic round is expansion. Does anyone know how well a cast bullet expands on varmints (groundhogs/coyote) with a 308 cast bullet.. going around... 900-1100 fps?

thinking of using 230gr bullet mold then getting it modified for HP. this will probably drop it down to 190-210 gr... then using trailboss to make mousefart expanding bullets for 308 varmint.

Cast bullets at 1100 fps are not going to expand at all on varmints, probably not even if hollowpointed. They will at 1400+

Unless you have a barrel with twist of about 1:8" you are not going to stabilize a 230-grain bullet subsonic.

A 1:10" twist will stabilize #311299 subsonic with 6 grains of Trail Boss in the .308, but even hollow pointed it isn't going to expand.

Mousefart loads are for low noise, not expansion. Not happening.

Better would be to use a lighter bullet such as Attachment 226911

Have this hollow-pointed with a deep cavity, major diameter 0.7 of meplat diameter with 15 degree draft angle so that cavity is four times as deep as its opening diameter, dropping weight to about 110 grains, air cooled wheelweights, then drive it to full M1 Carbine equivalent velocity, 1800 fps+ then it is "da Bomb!~"

You'd have to have a very soft alloy and hp to see good appreciable expansion at those velocities...but it's def possible. I mean the factory j word hp expand for 38 spec at velocities lower than that so you should be good. I imagine high lead content and experiment from there with milk jugs filled with water or wet packs of newspaper to see what they will do.

More than likely that ling of a bullet won't open up as much as it will yaw and deform along it's axis which is also ok as long as it does so consistently...if it does it sometimes and not others is when you may see a prob.

If you're shooting through a can I suggest powder coat to keep lead off the baffles...and make sure your load is stable before screwing on the can... otherwise you may get a bullet yawing inside if it isn't stable and there goes the can

I've often wondered what a tumbling boolit would do to an animal at close range....... If they would "group" fairly well at 50 yards and a coyote or diller came ambling by......

Why would you need any expansion with a 308 on a groundhog?
There is no difference between communism and socialism, except in the means of achieving the same ultimate end: communism proposes to enslave men by force, socialism—by vote. It is merely the difference between murder and suicide. Ayn Rand

He is worried about ricochets and wants a modern clone of the Ness Safety Bullet, originally designed in the 1930’s to be used in urban areas, as described in June 1935 American Rifleman.

I load the MP 311410 with deep hollowpoint in subsonic 300 BLK and get decent expansion. Since it is a hollowpointed spire point, the hollowpoint is more fragile and seems to guve decent expansion at subsonic velocities.

i would be using pure pb. I know we're talking boolits here, but take a look at www.outlawstatebullets.com and www.hawkbullets.com--these companies make bullets using very soft lead cores and thinnest, softest jackets and these open up and expand at subsonic velocities. heavy long bullets. I have managed to launch 240gr outlaws in 308 thru 1:10 handi rifle with suppressor and bowl over yotes and deer. I think a man could do the same with pure pb in the right shape.

If he where to use a flat point boolit he should be good with a lite cast boolit. I have take groundhog with my 22-250 with a 55gr and drop it where it was no problem. As for coyote it is shot placement. you do not need a very heavy booilt to take them down.Save the heavy boolits for something bigger then a coyote. That is for my advice.I do shoot coyotes in my traps with a 22lr. handgun. There is a post that talk about coyote hunting and also the size boolit to use also .

Here is a post that would help no matter if it is for 30-30 but give you a idea for the 308
