made my own bottom pour lead pot

6 inch diameter pipe 8 inches tall with bottom and legs welded on it. made a valve in bottom like the lee pot. the bolt in bottom is a 3/8 bolt with a 1/8 hole drilled through. used a steel countersink bit to bevel hole afterwards. 2-1200 watt band heaters 220 volt. wrapped with 1 inch kaowool and header wrap on outside to hold it all together. it took 20 minuts to melt 15 pounds of bullet rejects. no leak from valve yet. 15 pounds of lead after melted was at a depth of about 1 inch in bottom. i know it looks bad but it works. will post video once i finish pid of it in operation.

The photos look great, nice work! Looks like you can generate plenty of BTUs. You might want to check the bearings in your electric meter before you start any long casting sessions! LOL!
Looking forward to the video once you get it finished.

Jason F, nice job. Looks is in the eye of the beholder and only disparaged by the jealous. Thanks to the efforts and sharing by Jmorris I also built my first big melter a few years ago and I'm glad I did.

The 'talent' around this joint just knocks me out! Always prefer a shop-built tool to a store-bought, especially when they work as good or better.
Jmorris…You can just sit there, drink some cold beer and chunk lead and sprues into the pot! Watch those little lead nuggets pile up high!

I got those band heaters on ebay for $25 apiece plus $8 shipping. You got to look through them and find the 220 volt ones. Alot of them are 480 volt.

Thats a great deal, how many watts?

I used a $16 3500w oven heating element I picked up at Sears and wrapped it around the pot but the band element looks better and likely more efficient.
