    What's the Deal - 5574?

    Well, hello all,

While I may be new to this forum and shootin a 45-70, I am far from new to reloading and shootin in general! Been doing that for better than 30 years. But I'm trying to work up some loads for the new 45-70 and make some comparisons between smokeless and real BP. I've got two pounds of Goex FFg, but I'll be danged if I can find some 5574 or IMR 4891 to try smokeless.

So I've looked back a buncha pages to see if anything was posted here, but does anyone know why this stuff is as rare as photos of a pretty Hillary Clinton?

    Appreciate your comments in advance.

    Jim

The best thing for powder is to check Gunbot. That said, a nice plinking load is 11gr Unique behind a 405gr boolit. It would help if you told us what gun you're loading for.

Yup. Dyslexia is a terrible - Hey look over there...

    I did mean 5744.

    I am loading for a Pedersoli Sharps. 34" barrel 1 in 18.

I did get a shipment of Buffalo Bullets in 500 and 405 Grain. SPG lube so I can use either BP or Smokeless.

Get some SR4759 if you can find it before it disappears.
    IMR4227 will work too.

Local gunshop has several pounds of 5744.
......at $55 per pound they can forcibly insert it into their rectum.

If you can find 2400, try 25 grains behind the 405. About 1450 fps and gentle recoil.

I was able to find some Hodgdon H4198 at the local gun shop. Picked up two pounds.

Still curious why 5744 is unobtanium though.

And no. Hillary was never pretty. Just sayin...

Did load 40 boolits today. 20 each of the 405 and the 500 in Starline cases with 60.0 Gn of Goex FFg with a cardboard wad. Later this week I'll get 40 with 20 of each in 405 and 500 over the H4198. Primers are CCI 200's. Saturday if the weather is with me will be a range day. Just fun shootin.

I'll let ya know how it goes.

Accurate 5744 Smokeless Powder is popular there for it just disappears off the shelves.
it's useful in more than just 45-70 so like trailboss and some other powders that are imported we are
snapping it up faster than it comes available.

Reloader 7 also workes well ! in my Browning BPCR and the Saeco 540 gr boolet 50 grs of 4831 gave me the most accurate smokless powder load of the 5 ones that i tried.
I have gotten excellent results with 5744 in my 9 year old grandsons Rem #7 in 7mm08 for reduced loads with several J bullets.

I bought my 2 cans of 5744 about 10 years ago. not sure of the present avalibaltyin my area.

4198 and 5744 can both be found here in Idaho although the price is up 33 dollars for 4198 last I checked. It would be a long drive but if you drop by I will give you my stock of the new version AA5744 as in my guns with my loads the stuff burns filthy. Have heard that it works better in the 45-70 than my 30cals. GP

Trail Boss is a real fav. because the recommended charges almost fill the case and are still small charges, because it is such a bulky powder, it is very safe because you can not double charge the large cases.

    5744 hard to find?

I sure guess it depends on where you live and what others buy.
5744 has been the only fast rifle powder I have found available.
I have 6 pounds of it purchased a pound at a time.
Stop in every where looking for RL-7 and come out with 5744.

The last jug of RL-7 I have seen I purchased a year and a half ago.
Found at a old gun shop up Nort. Had the old circle labels on the jugs.
So he had them a while.

Luckily my SKS likes 5744 to push cast out of it. So I can use it up pretty quick.
