    Boolit selection for 7x57

I have a Ruger No.1 RSI in 7x57 that I'm wanting to start casting for. I have had some great guidence so far but I/we are also up to other suggestions for this particular cartridge. The barrel slugs at .2833" and it seems to have a longer throat, roughly .270"-.300"
What do you think would be the ideal boolit design for this cartridge and rifle?

I have the same gun. Mine is a later one with a short throat. I use a Lyman 120 Gr. mold, and it is one of my most accurate CB rifles.
I will look up the bullet and data in the morning.

    How tight are the groups?
How did you measure the throat length?

I am getting 2" groups @ 100 yards average. My best was 1 3/16". The rifle has a 2.5 power scope.
The bullet is a Lyman 285448 GC ot of WW over 17.5 Gr. IMR 4198 giving 1700 FPS.
I didn't measure the throat, but I can seat 140 jacketed to touch the lands. A disscussion on the Ruger 1 group said that early 7X57 were throated for 175 Gr. bullets. This was changed in later rifles, but I don't remember the date or serial #.

My RSI is a 2007 model, serial 134-20xxx

Whats an easy way to measure the length of the throat?

Are you able to seat the boolit on the lands? What diameter is the nose?

Mine is earlier than that, I would say you have the short throat.
Ask in the Ruger 1 group at Yahoo, they know all the dates.

here is what I do for seating ....
take a fired case and drill out the primer hole to a diameter just large enough to pass a piece of coat hanger ("rod"). On this piece slip (friction fit) a small piece of plastic tubing...this should slid but have to friction so it won't move on its own. drop a bullet/boolit into the case mouth and carefully insert into the chamber...push the rod forward until you feel the bullet/boolit seat,,,then push the plastic tubing up until it bottoms on the back end of the primer pocket...
remove all from the chamber....reinsert the bullet/boolit into the case mouth and set it according to the rod position. Bingo,,,you have set the seating depth to the lands

Or, use a fired case from the gun. Fill the case with fluffy grits, corn meal, etc. Use high viscosity lube all over the insides of the neck after filling the case to bottom of neck area with filler. Insert boolit by hand and let the gun seat the boolit. Measure several rounds and take an average, and use that length for starters, then alternate shorter and longer. ... felix

Ben, would that boolit be considered a bore riding boolit?

If you don't mind give me a little time, I am considering your offer. I'm trying my best to wrap my brain around what boolits will work and what won't and why.....which mold will be the best for my No.1.

Fine by me I forgot I even had it until I saw your post ,I also have a .284 sizer die and top punch and some Lyman gas checks. I seated mine out to touch the rifling and it shot real well in a long throat.

What length would you consider a "long throat"?

I looked, but I can't find my load data, but I seem to remember that it only went half way down the neck when seated and had quite a few grease grooves showing when loaded. an example,I have a .257 Roberts Ackley Imp. Its built on a long action so it has a long throat to seat out to get as much powder in it as I can with jacketed boolits but with my 120gr.cast with a bore rider bullet like in post 12 and several different powders it will shoot an inch group at 75 yards all day,but with my 90 gr. loverin boolit design I can get all of them to touch at same distaces with same powders.

A BRP mold based off of Lyman 287641 is doing VERY well for me at this time. My best group so far at 50yds is 1.192" center to center. And velocity is 2250's average.
