I agree 100% with this. A model 616 in 327 would be the cats meow for a field revolver.

BTW Al, a model 30-1 or later (when the model transitioned from improved I-to J frame) can accept those oversize J-frame target stocks, and you can't tell the difference. The model 30-1 I pictured above is doing that trick with smooth target stocks for the square butt J-frame.

Well 9.3, several of your wishes are fairly easily fulfilled... you can put any of the Pachmayer stocks made for a J-frame onto an I-frame. They have about an eighth to a quarter of an inch of space at the bottom of the grip frame, but the screw and locating pin hold them in place, and although it's not needed, you could even put a little spacer of some sort in there if you wanted. There are still lots of pre-War I-frame Regulation Police and Hand Ejectors floating around out there with 4" barrels (or 4.25") if that is the length you want. If you are doing some 'smithing of your own, you might consider a project Hondo44 and I have also contemplated, milling the top strap of a RP and putting in modern J-frame adjustable sights, then installing an appropriate front sight. I still might do that for occasions when the 616 is "too much gun."

As for the Single Six, there are 32 Mag versions of that available... I think most have longer barrels, but that's easy enough to fix. If that turns your crank, you could probably be shooting that combo (with 32 S&W or H&R Mag) pretty quickly.

Keep your hopes up on one or the other of the possibilities above. As for the time "...that S&W gets off their fat apathy and actually builds a 616..." we've all pretty much decided that won't be likely to be ever. They have been very tentative with any new revolvers and their record for encouraging any of the 32s has been pretty spotty since some time back in the '60s or '70s. Besides, who wants a cast frame S&W with MIM internals and an Internal Lock for their "special gun?" I think the only way you'll get a 616 is to build your own, a process I highly recommend.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

PS You might try GunBroker auction# 344879537 for that SS/SS.

    Froggie,

I have considered milling the tops strap of that model 30-1 I've got for a J-adjustable sight, and adding the appropriate front site. I just haven't been able to prod myself into having it done yet (and I've been having some issues with the local smith I would have had do the work for me...).

Since I have the 631 and various other adjustable sighted .32's in the same size range, I might never get the motivation, but I sure do like the idea!

Just to show you what kind of nice guy I am, I'll take the 631 off your hands to help nudge you along on this project. No, no, don't thank me, I'm just that selfless sort of a guy!

Well, I'm not sure I've ever had a more generous offer, but I'd feel terrible about it, so the only way I could take advantage in such a blatant manner would be if I did the same for you with that 616...

Guess you'd better resolve your issues with your gunsmith, NZ.

As the last real president said, "... from my cold, dead hands!"

Let me know if I can help you get going on your I-frame project, though.

    Regards,
    Froggie

I have seen only photos of the J-frame target stocks--never handled a pair, or a revolver equipped with same.

I'm not especially enamored with the 327 Federal, having a S&W Model 16-4 x 6". Loaded to the 32 Magnum's full potential, the performance gain with the 327 isn't all that great. I had a Ruger SSM many years ago, liked it a lot, but the 16-4 won my heart with its superior accuracy. It remains the most accurate revolver I have ever owned.

My cravings are more for a 32 SWL, since I have a TON of ammo in that caliber on hand. I'm not fond of shooting Special-length cartridges in Magnum-length chambers, the crud rings that form in the chambers annoy me greatly. So an actual 32 SWL is what's desired. I thought long and hard about a 4" 31-1 I saw in April at the Fort Boise Gun Show, but the price was over $100 higher than many I've seen on Gunbroker in similar shape. CA laws and regs complicate the h--l out of acquisition, too--and the stupid AG just placed a freeze on the number of handguns coming into CA today. Where the hell is NRA? Silence of the Lambs, as usual.

9.3, you might look at the want ads on the S&W Forum for those J-Targets. I've gotten a couple of pairs through that venue and they have a lot to recommend them. I don't especially like K-frame Targets, and N-frame Targets are way too big for my hands, but the little J-Targets are like Baby Bear's Bed... "just right!"

I don't know which part of Kalifornia you are in, but I have a couple of e-friends on the S&W Forum who hail from the same state, so they are used to dealing with the vagaries of finding neat S&Ws before the bears in Sacramento get them.

Oh, yes--vagaries. I am another adroit navigator of those dark waters. It will happen. Single-action revos are pretty much left alone by the Sacto hoplophobes, a SS mod might go forward shortly.

Here is my one and only I just found. 1905 HE 3rd change, 32 Winchester.

Looks nice mustanggt, especially with that long barrel and those very nice wood grips. Do you get to shoot it often? Mine has a 1" shorter barrel and the no-medallion grips which have experienced a lot more wear than yours. Sadly, it gets pushed to the back of the bench too often as its smaller brethren demand more attention from me. Of course it can use the exact same bullets as my 327 FM, and the dies and brass (including 100 rounds of virgin Starline) are right on the table... maybe I will get mine out since you've stirred up my interest!

I just got it the other day so I've not shot it yet. Brass is on the way though and she will go on next range trip. Found out the stocks don't go with the gun. They are 20 years newer but look right just the same.

Original stocks, and all. Looks "uncirculated", to coin a phrase. (Oh, that was bad.....)

Another gun porn item, posted recklessly and with great abandon. Stop it some more.
