Is that 17 hmr or 17mach2 ????
I have a Marlin 917.
Very fun to shoot. I get an honest 2600fps with the 17 grain ammo. I don't shoot it all that much because ammo costs are kind of crazy for a rimfire.
When I bought the rifle ammo was $9 for 50 rounds. I thought ammo would go down as the round became more mature, but it's actually gone up.
I built (2) 17hm2 on 10/22 receivers, they both shoot great. The little round will take out Pdogs out to 150 yards easily anything beyond 175ish wind really hurts it (I’m talking 5 mph) and it begins to be a **** shoot on the hits.
If you buy one or build it get your ammo in large lots once you find the manufacture that will shoot in your gun. Buy ya a box of everything out there and see what shoots the best in your rifle. My rifle shoots CCI's in small group’s dad’s likes Eley's.

warf is 100% on the ammo I have a 77 ruger and it likes the Aguila best but does ok with CCI
If you get a 17mach2 don't get it from Thompson Center. This is what you may end up with and they won't do anything about it.

I have a nice little CZ, expensive to shoot, when the grass gets a little thick it's hard to see impacts. The wind has good effect on it. Considering the cost of ammo the 22 lr works better for me.
When shooting at ground squirrels one round with the 22 shows the correction needed, the next one get's him.
two rounds from the 22 are cheaper than one from the 17mach2.
When shooting the 17 often the impacts are not visable in the grass, so guessing I fire 3 or 4 before getting the right wind correction and a hit.
Last couple of years it has been my favorite for the back yard, very little chance of doing damage on ricocet.
Prevaling wind blocked by the house, fired prone from second floor deck it's good for the seventy yards to the back fence.
Ole chuck climbing up on my boat and pooping gotta go.
To lazy to chase arrows.

I believe the brass splitting problem was from Hornady ammo. They didn't annel the first batches of brass or so I was told. I just got a TC 21 inch custom shop barrel and shooting Eley 17 mach2 and no problem with splitting brass. It will be a great back yard groundhog and pond varmint setup.
Not just Hornady. More here, if your interested. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=39817

I have a Savage in 17m2 great gun I like Eley ammo best no neck splits, get splits with CCI and Hornady.
I shot 50 rounds today with no neck splits using Eley. 10 shot groups at 50 yds were under half inch. Loving my tender.
Jon, I have a laminated ruger and a Reminton 504 and am very fond of them both. The Mach 2 is the best small game round you will ever take hunting. Good shooters and ready for any shot you can think of. Also agree with ammo testing. Find what it likes and place an order for several bricks. Mike
