    Lee Bulge Buster Kit!

Lee has come out with a product that will effectively remove the lower bulge in cartridge cases that the standard reloading sizing die will not reach. This bulge has be refered to as "The Glock Bulge". The kit consists of a push thru punch that mount on the ram like a shellholder, a extension sleeve, and a catch container. The kit requires one of Lee's excellent Factory Carbide Crimp Dies and will work on these cartridges: 380 ACP, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 45 Win Mag, 10 mm, 41 AE, and 45 gap.

Midway has these kits in stock along with the Lee FCCD's if you don't already have them. I have one on order already. I saw an ad in the April issue of Shooting Times magazine if you want a better discription.

My hat is off to Lee once again for coming up with an inexpensive answer to a common problem for reloaders. The kit is a little over $15 at Midway.

My hat is off because Lee actually listens to what their customers want and to what their customers are customizing their current products to do. Alot of Lee products were designed and/or customized by LEE CUSTOMERS.

If Lyman would fix their rectal cranial inversion and do the "LISTEN" thing by bringing back some old classic moulds................they would be putting money in their pocket.

It is a good thing for us we have custom mould makers as sponsor members here and that they are willing to make what we want. Most all of my good loads are with a custom mould.....quite often that custom is just a properly sized version of something that lyman decided they could not make enough money on at some point. Ignorance is fixable.........stupid is not.

I like a lot of others begged LEE to produce these units. I finally had one of our members custom make one. Mine works great on 40cal brass. Hope LEE's are as good.

The kit consists of a brass catcher (identical to the boolit catcher on the sizing kits), a small (and short) push-rod, and a sleeve that adapts the FCD to either the brass catcher, or a Lee Loadmaster guide tube.

The first thing I noticed is the pusher has a recess in the top, probably to allow use of the kit with loaded ammo.

Here is the factory crimp die. Take it apart, remove the crimp bushing (center) and thread the adapter into the FCD body. It doesn't show up in the photo but there is a small chamfer on one end of the crimp bushing. Make sure to put it back together correctly, or your FCD will be primed to ruin ever round put through it!

Here is the kit ready to use on my Rockchucker.

I did not have any truly bulged brass readily available (I can round some up easy enough), so I just took some once fired brass and ran it through. I used Winchester brass, and compared it to new Winchester factory ammo.

    Here are the results:

New Factory ammo, diameter at base: 0.421"

Once fired range pickup, diameter at base: 0.429"

    After sizing, base diameter: 0.422"

Nowhere near scientific as I only sized a few, but it looks promising.

I will sort through my range pickup brass and try to find some obvious Glock brass and then I will compare the "Bulgebuster" to my standard carbide sizer.

As a followup to my review post, I must say it does seem to work well, but the force required to push a "glocked" case through is noticeably higher than an "un-glocked" case.

Also I have observed that some cases have a slightly oversized rim that requires a lot of force to push through. I need to reinforce my bench a bit as it flexes when I hit one with an oversized rim. Once through however, they look fine.

Oh, and just a heads up, make sure you don't have any 41 AE cases mixed in with the 40 S&W. They are kind of tough to get out.

Thats a slow way to do it and it won't clean up the extractor grove but the price is right.

Some people would complain if they were hung with a new rope.

    +1 on the above!

I don't know of anything that is press mounted that will clean up an extractor groove. If the extractor groove is that bad the brass goes into the recycle bin.

Not me. Looks like a bargain, just seems like a lot of time if your doing much volume.

I don't get it; if you have to buy the factory crimp die separately anyway, why would you buy one of these kits, when you could just buy a Lee size die kit for the same price? You get everything above, except for the unnecessary extension sleeve, but you get a sizer die. Also the sizer die punches are longer, and would probably work better.

We are talking about full length sizing the case including the web and rim area that the standard sizing die will not reach. I think you may be confusing this unit with the boolit sizing die and punch which is not the same thing but is the same principal. The Lee Factory Carbide Crimp Die uses a carbide ring of the proper dimension to size the case where the boolit sizing die is plain steel and would not be the correct dimension in most instances. In the past I have thought about modifily a boolit sizing die to the correct size to use as a full length case sizer but was too lazy to carry though with the idea. Since I already have the Lee FCCD's the $15 bulge buster kit is the answer to my lazyness.

No, I'm not confusing anything. I'm not saying to use the bullet size die, I'm saying for the same money as the kit you mentioned, you could basically get a free bullet sizing die to use for your other calibers.

The punch that comes with the Lee sizer dies will work fine to push brass through the factory crimp die; it's longer than the one in your kit, but works the same way.

I used the punch out of my .358 sizing die to test things out before the "bulgebuster" arrived. It worked fine for pushing brass, but I would not trust loaded ammo with it. Too much chance of a high primer ruining my day.

The extension sleeve is a gift from heaven compared to just using the FCD and a sizer punch. I can just let the cases gather in a container, the brass doesn't jam on the FCD threads, and the container doesn't jump off the press when I hit a hard one.

I was wondering if the extension sleeve would eliminate the brass catching on the sizing die threads. I hope to get mine tomorrow.
