    405 Winchester

Anybody casting for a 405 Winchester?I have a friend with a new production 1895 and I am looking for a mold.I'm not sure of an exact diameter as we haven't slugged the barrel yet.I am hoping to get a 300gr. mold.I have seen some 350 gr. but not sure I want to go that high.

Yes, I cast for the .405 Winchester, for both a TC Contender and a Ruger #1. I had Mountain Molds make up a 300 grain GC-FP for the .405, and I also use an NEI #225A mould that Erik Ohlen converted one of the cavitites to drop HP bullets. The solid bullet weighs about 370 grains and the HP a little bit less. 4895 is an excellent powder for the .405 Winchester. Nominal bullet diameter is .411", and I generally size cast bullets .412".

    JT,

I have one of the new reproduction 1895s that I bought 3 years ago. I too had Dan at mountain moulds build me a 350 gr plain base flat nose. Shoots like a house a'fire. Mountain moulds makes a great product. If you haven't checked them out yet you should. The web page lets you enter all the criteria that you want in your boolit and as you enter the data there is a feature on the right side of the page that draws the boolit as you go. You literally design your own boolit on the fly. The cnc program to build the mould is created by the web page at the same time.

    Have fun

RCBS .416"/350gr FN comes out around .417"/370gr. that I size down to .413"+ to shoot in my .405 Ruger.. Not the 300gr. you are looking for though.

I cast the Lyman 412263, comes out 290 grs +-.
Buffalo arms has a 300 gr .413 gc mold that is showing some good results.
Long range rules, the rest drool.

I have been loading and shooting 405 in an 1895 Winchester. Also use Lyman mold #412263 that is an older single cavity mold. I think that newer versions are double cavs. Bullet weight using WW comes out between 292 and 300 grains and as cast diameter is .413. Have used IMR 3031 powder and moderate loadings in the 1400-1500 fps range. Factory velocity can be attained (around 2250 fps), but recoil is not fun to deal with. Several other powders also work fine as well. Brass is available from Hornady via Midsouth or Midway for around $45. for 50 cases.LLS

I've had very good luck with the RCBS 350. Like Nrut said, as cast these are .417, which I also size to .413 for a .412 barrel. With my WW/Tin alloy, these weigh about 363gr. 49gr of Reloader 7 produces a little over 2200fps (2232 5 shot avg) and just over 2" @ 100 with no sign of excessive pressure in my rifle. Recoil is stiff, but I always use a Pact recoil pad and a folded dish towel when test firing. Plus, I don't have a .405 to shoot little whitetails.
