    Need info on T/C Contender

I have an old Contender Super 14 that I bought new in 1984. I used to know all the interchangeablity cans and can'ts, but now I've forgotten and can't find it spelled out anywhere. What I would like to know is if it will accept the carbine barrels and stocks, what parts work and those that won't. Anybody have that knowledge?

Any contender barrel will work. The stocks are specific to type, original version versus G2.

Guess I'm in business, and need some new toys for it! I had it in my mind somewhere that the super 14's had an issue. Thanx.

Only armor alloy barrels will not work with the old Contender frames, unless they were converted. Armor alloy barrels that were converted by the factory to work with all blue or stainless frames will have a * symbol on the right side of the lug or maybe it was a star...I can't remember.

The armor alloy barrels were made for the armor alloy frame. The difference is the hinge pin circumference.

I purchased a 21 inch T/C Custom Shop Match Grade .22 barrell at a pawn shop and it fits my old T/C frame. I did purchasr a new unfinished forearm from BulBerry. I have a Harris bipod on it for the grandkids to shoot. It is very accurate.

I would like to know what it is because I have a super 14 on one of my recently purchased Contenders. I think the super 14's had two forearm screws where the others had one, but I am not sure of this and probably isn't what you are thinking about.

As mentioned, the only "issue" is with the Armor Alloy barrels. The plating made the hinge pin hole smaller. You can easily have the hole in the barrel lug reamed just enough to remove the plating. It is NOT good to simply use a smaller pin, as then the pin will be loose in the frame and accuracy will suffer along with lockup/headspace geometry. Other than that, all Contender barrels (of any length) will fit any Contender frame whether original or G2.

The only possible half-exception is with VERY early frames, where the new split lug barrels aren't fully compatible with the old frames, and vice versa, where old solid lug barrels and new frames can be iffy. Both very old barrels and frames are rare now. Any misfit can be cured by simply installing split lugs in the barrel.

Finally, the usual reminder that you can install any barrel length on a pistol frame, but you can NOT install a barrel shorter than 16" on a carbine frame - and it is wise to determine if a given frame left the factory as a pistol or carbine, because THAT is the determining factor.

ATF has changed their position on the pistol/rifle frame issue. If we are talking rifle stock on a TC frame, the barrel must be 16" or more. Had a David White Maximizer brake permanently installed on my Super 14 35 Rem. so I could convert to carbine. If you install a brake to increase barrel length on a super 14, the brake must be permanently attached.

You have a whole gun or just the barrel?
You can put any barrel on any frame, but need a old carbine stock for a old frame but it will fit.
It is illegal to have anything under 16" on a rifle stock.
A G-2 Stock will not fit it.
