here goes
I have a 32 and a 36 Hawken mountain rifle style and neither has a threaded brass tipped wood or fiberglass ramrod.
Where should I look for caliber capable tips, for that matter the cleaning jags?
A 2117 Easton aluminum arrow will work as a ramrod in the 36 but not the 32 (if you have to ask...) the 32 I got a 1/4" brass rod at the local ACE that seats a ball pretty soundly but won't under the barrel in the thimbles.

I would look at Track of the wolf and or the log cabin.

What actual sizes do you need to fit in the thimbles. On line metals may have brass tubing that could be made into a rod

Track of the wolf carries all that stuff. Fiberglass can be hard on a barrel, especially the crown. For safety's sake I use Delron rods, bought a 5/16 for my 42 inch .32 and 3/8 for anything bigger. I made a iron wood rod for the .32 for display.

I have nice wooden rods for all my rifles in the racks, but I carry Delrin rods in my rifles while hunting or at the range. I got them from Track of the Wolf, and I got the ones with the built-in bullet puller that is inside the seating stem. I recommend that one needs to drill and pin rod ends (both ends) after I had one jag come off inside a bore. I just shot it out with a grain of powder inserted into the flash hole.

exactly what I needed to know.
I'd been using 1/4" solid brass rod but that won't stay in the thimbles and retaining spring, though it sure seats the ball solidly.

I guess I'm a dinosaur because I bought a dozen hickory rods, mixed sizes, decades ago and worked them to fit under the barrel of their respective rifles. They came with the metal tips ready for screw on accessories. A friend took them and soaked them in kerosene, he said, keep them from breaking easily. I don't know if that helped but none of my hickory rods have broken. I use the wood rods even when I go to the range but do have several "range rods" of steel, aluminum and fiberglass that I use to clean with. Whatever rods you get make sure to also get a muzzle protector for each one.

I found that ATF or bear oil penetrates much better than the old kerosene soak. It evaporates away. Both of the others will penetrate completely through the rod. My dedicated cleaning rod has had both ATF and bear oil used to wipe it down over the years, and it's limp as a noodle!

I've purchased differing diameter brass rods from MSC and either turned them on my lathe or did a D&T for jags. So far so good. Adds weight to the rifle while carrying, but I don't walk far anymore. Very nice to have the weight at the range.
