Over powder wad and filler really helped

In developing a good deer load for my .38-55 H&R Model 1871, I've discovered that adding a milk carton punch-out wad over the powder followed by 1/4 square of rolled/folded toilet paper filler reduced the 50-yard group to 1". Both 25 grains of IMR 4198 and 25 grains of N-130 shoot the .381" 245-grain powder coated Slippery Bullet to the same point of aim at that distance, much better than the 2+ inch group with just the powder load alone. I think I've found my deer hunting load. Next in load-development line is my Martini .219 Zipper.

Good shooting TRG3! So far, all of the cartridges that I've been able to shoot a 1 MOA (or smaller) cast bullet group with have used a filler to keep the powder charge back near the flash hole. It's a rare event indeed when I can shoot that good, but every time that I've been able to pull it off it's been while using a filler.

Half a grain of dacron fluff over 29 grains of 4227 with a 420 grain WFN holds everything in place and give great confidence when aiming at paper or hide. Some folks say it isn't necessary, but a few extra minutes at the reloading bench is a small price for accuracy and satisfaction in the shot.

They say using wads can ring a chamber.
Use a tuft of Dacron pushed loosely over the powder.
Don`t pack it in.
Use a loose tuft that fills the space between the powder and the bullet.

Kapok from an old life preserver works great and keeps a cardboard wad ringing the chamber. Just experiment with rolling up a small ball of the kapok and stuffing it over the powder. A little too much will not matter but will produce excellent consistant ignition by keeping the powder tight against the primer flash hole. Have used it for 40 years.
