Does anyone else have experience with this rifle? I picked one up from a friend and it is in great condition for an 82 year old rifle. The only item that is not original is the forward trigger guard screw. It has the adjustable trigger, rotating front sight w/ hood, original sling swivels, steel but plate and rotating rear peep sight. It is factory drilled and tapped for a side mounted scope. Has anyone used a side mounted scope (from Havlin) on these rifles?

I just dipped my toe into these Mossberg 22s. Bought a 42M and 144LSB on Tuesday. $550 out the door for the pair. Both are wearing scopes. The 42M is wearing the same mount as what Havlins sells. And the 144 is like new. Bright bores, both. Rimfirecentral has dozens of threads. I’m learning, so can offer no help, but do think you picked up a nice one!

I have two of them that I bought years ago from the CMP. The holes on the side of the receiver are for the rear peep sight. There is a picture here: https://www.bidsquare.com/online-auc...-1143481878225

Certainly no reason the holes can’t be used with a scope mount though.

Mine has another set of drilled and tapped holes in the left side of the receiver. Here is another vendor of the scope mount. Not all of the rifles had these holes.

I recently sold my 46b but it did have a Havlin mount that fits on the side holes, it a sturdy mount works very well. I had a 3/4 inch Mossberg scope but wanted to put a 1 inch scope on the rifle.

I have a Mossberg Model 44 us [a] that I bought many years ago in a Lawton, Oklahoma pawn shop. It had a scope mount attached with a 3/4 inch Mossberg scope with a collapsed reticle. I peeled off the scope and mount and have used only the iron sights. These rifles are amazingly accurate, especially when you find the ammo it likes. There is nothing fancy about these rifles and the metal stamped parts are noticeable. The micrometer rear with the front sight selection choice of a bead, post or ring sight provides a very useable platform for iron sight lovers and the triggers on these rifles are really crisp. Mine shoots the Federal Gold Metal Match the best but it, surprisingly, shot very well with the Remington Yellow Jacket cheap stuff that used to be found most everywhere in the big box stores. I bought a really nice, factory, used barrel for it at a gun show sometime back but it shoots no better than the original barrel despite the many thousands of rounds that have gone down that old tube.

Update..Scope mount was delivered, scope ordered and mounted. Just dropped the scope on the mounts and aligned. No bore sighting. First 5 shot group was 1.25" to the right and 0.5" low at 45 yards. Adjusted, shot, adjusted and shot again. Third 5 shot group was a single ragged hole at 45 yards. This rifle definitely shoots better than I. The ammo was cheap bulk Federal Auto Match. Extremely pleased with this 82 year old rifle.

I have my Dad's Mossberg 44 us(b) that he ordered from an ad in Fur-Fish-& Game in the early 1950s. They advertised them as surplus Navy training rifles. It has the front sight hood with 4 different flip-up front sights, the adjustable peep sight, and a 4x older small Weaver scope in a side mount. Some older PMC target ammo will consistently shoot a dime size group at 25 yards with the peeps. This was my Dad's only rifle and anything considered to be a pest or a threat to our animals on the farm was in danger of elimination out to 125 yards. He was the perfect example of beware the man with only one gun because he probably knows how to use it well.
