Patmarlins Wadcutter™ Die Sets
Over the last 18 years, many of you have trusted my Checkmaker™ dies to stamp out precision gas checks on your reloading presses. Lately, I've been working to solve another common bench headache using that same 7/8"-14 die infrastructure: cutting your own over-powder cards, hard Nitro cards, and vegetable fiber wads.
Right now, most guys are still using hand-struck hollow punches and mallets over a block of wood. It’s slow, loud, and hard on the elbows.
I'm propsing a Press-Mounted Hard-Card & Veggie Wad Cutter. True to my shop's standards, these are machined to within .0005” tolerances with a tight, sub-.002" diametrical clearance between the male punch and female cutting ring. They provide a crisp, industrial-grade shear instead of a ragged tear.
The Machine Specs & Material Physics:
Fit: Standard 7/8"-14 thread (RCBS Rock Chucker, Lee, Hornady, etc.).
Material Slot: Machined with a 0.090” (3/32") high feed window. This is optimized to effortlessly feed rigid, flat strip materials like 0.030" and 0.060" Karropak vegetable fiber gasket sheet, heavy chipboard, or Nitro card stock. (Note: Spongy wool felt or cork will not feed or cut correctly with this design).
Max Strip Width: .686”.
High Yield: You can index your cuts as close as 1/32” apart, getting maximum yield out of a standard 6" to 8" strip.
I am limiting production strictly to two standard baseline sizes per caliber. Because of the physical wall-thickness constraints of a 7/8" die body, the absolute maximum diameter is capped at .625”.

Material Prep Requirement:
To ensure a perfect shear, your raw gasket or card material must be sliced into straight, uniform strips up to .686” wide using a standard desktop paper cutter before feeding it into the die window.

Info on materials:
Because I am building these tools on a standard 7/8"-14 die body with a maximum strip width of .686”, the physical size of the wad you choose dictates the material you must use. Think of it like managing web thickness when blanking out metal:
The Big Bores & Sub-Gauges (20-Gauge / .625" Blank): Punching a .625" circle out of a .686" strip leaves a skeletal web of only 0.030” (about 1/32") per side. Because that remaining border is razor-thin, this size is strictly for rigid materials like 0.030" or 0.060" Karropak vegetable fiber, heavy chipboard, or Nitro card stock. A rigid strip holds its shape and lets you punch holes just 1/32" apart. If you try to feed floppy 1/8" wool felt at this diameter, the strip will instantly buckle, twist, and jam the die.
The Traditional Muzzleloaders (.50 Cal / .515" & .45 Cal / .462"): As you step down in diameter, we gain massive amounts of internal steel shoulder support and a much thicker structural web on the strip (nearly triple the support). Because of this extra bone, the .45 and .50 caliber dies will easily handle both rigid cardstock AND spongy 1/8" wool felt or cork strips. (Note: Because felt is spongy, you will just need to space your cuts about 1/8" apart so the material doesn't deform into the previous hole).
