65 grains of powder is an impressive amount of powder to get in that case no mater the type. This old Whelen shooter would like to know the details if you are willing.

This is my first three shot 100 yard group out my 35 Whelen I shot after loc titing my pump’s slide tube in place on my 7600 along with “floating” the pump. I repeated that tight group four times in a row that same day. They were all in the .3” group range.
Pretty mild load imo for my little carbine whelen. I’ve shot quite a few deer with it. I want to try to try a heavier bullet on deer in the future.

It was a starting powder charge with 180 grain hot cores. It was random load I ised to zero in my optic…and I just got lucky it was a “good” load.

To improve a .35 just make the case neck longer.

That put's the lowly 35 Whelen on the heel's of the 338 Win.mag

Someone just needs to make a 35 RUM and call it a day
Greetings,
That's been done, 358 UMT. I think UMT is Ultra Mag Towsley after a guy who used to be published in the Rifleman.
The kissing cousin is the STA, Shooting Times Alaskan. I think that one was Layne Simpson.
Best
The RUMs use a 404 Jeffery case and neck it down.
It's all about potential
don't squander it try to exploit it

I guess it must be over 20 year ago, but the MTU at what was then Ft. Benning did some extensive testing of the 760/7600 because of what is pretty much a free-floating barrel system. They were looking into its potential as an unobtrusive-looking urban/suburban sniper system. I lost my contact at the base before the study was complete, so I don't know the final results. GF
Many think you need all manner of things with a 35, that are based on old wives tales. Truth is the 35 is a perfect cast bullet caliber. Bullet weights from 200 to 180. The twist rates from 20 to 12 do work well, and a plain base flat nose with the base powder coated can get you to 2,500 feet per second and sub 1/2" groups at 100 meters. If you punch a 358 diameter bullet hole with a flat nose what is the need for expansion if you can shoot?
RCBS discontinued the 358 in the 200 grain plain base mould, but Saco still makes that iron mould. You might try it in the 35
I have a few 358 guns and a few cartridges types and a few moulds. I have worn out three RCBS 200 grain moulds that were replaced by RCBS free of charge.
I have been shooting the 35 Cast for over 45 years in competition.

If you look at my avatar that's with a 35 cast hollow point. I've repeated that group several times.
I am looking to use the Ideal 358-238 in my 350 Remington Mag. The boolits drops at 217 gr from ww and is a round nose plain base. I would like to push it at around 2500. My jacketed go to load has been the Sierra 225 Gameking at 2625 in the past, but that was when I lived in Alaska and needed it for moose and bears. I now live in North Florida and will be using it for deer and pigs. Anybody have experience with this boolit? I do not want to get a different mold or go with gas checks. I only shoot PC plain base at this point and don't intend to change that.
my humble opinion, I think you are asking too much from what you have to work with. Gas blow-by would probably defeat the powder coated plain base, marring accuracy a leading your barrel. It would take straight linotype or monotype hardness and the the round nose won't give the energy transfer of a FN or jacketed expanding bullet. You would be better to buy a box of jacketed or Barnes for what you want to accomplish.
Again, MHO.
This is my 350 RM that I shoot cast through. The 200 grain RCBS plain base hard cast and will hold up to 2,500 fps for me, without leading or fouling. I use 4350, 1680 or Unique for softer loads.
I use a WW, Lino, and Magnum shot alloy of 70%, 20, 10 by weight, water dropped, dried and then shake and baked PC using Eastwood chrome black, baked 400 @20 minutes, baked nose down in hardware cloth box, turned upside down, 1" off the oven bottom. Air cooled then Sized using case lube on a case pad to the actual groove diameter, no crimp. The bullets will hold to .43" at 100 meters. The 217 grain might be close enough to the 200. My 350 RM is in a Mauser Action so the longer OAL is possible.
RCBS discontinued the plain base mould, but Saceo now makes it in a two cavity iron. I too have started shooting plain base powder coated hard cast. I prefer relying on accuracy and shot placement with the first shot over expansion and have shot for many years with single shot handguns and rifles.

225-250 partition for elk, 200 grn rn corelock bulk bullets for deer
Thanks for all of the input. Mine is also built on a Mauser action, so I have some additional length to play with as I dial in loads and feeding. I guess I just need to get out the chronograph and start working up loads.
Like the 35x57 on the right?

I have a .350 Rem Mag Special Classic Edition (pre-order only) 700 with a 22" barrel. It came out in the 1980s and I purchased a box of the only ammo for it that the store carried, Remington 250 grain pointed. I did kill several deer with that one box of 250s and they did perform admirably. But I reloaded the cases with 200 grain Hornady spire points to about 2700 fps as this gave the finest accuracy and more power than that wasn't needed. Consistent 100 yard 5-shot groups averaged 1/2". I own only one other rifle that can beat that and then not even consistently.
Young guys should hang out with old guys; old guys know stuff.
I just started work building a sporter in 35 Remington based on a 1895 Chilean Mauser action. All the stars were aligning for this build. About a year ago I was able to pick up both the RCBS 35-200-FN and the 35-250-FN molds, both in new/unused condition at a bargain price. I was able to get a contoured 35 caliber barrel blank on sale + a discount code. Back when milsurps were cheap and plentiful I was able to buy a pair of 95 Chilean actions for the unheard of price of $35 each. I already have aftermarket Timney triggers, low scope safeties, scope mounts & rings, etc. The action that I'm using has a hinged floorplate, and I've already welded on a turned down bolt handle. The only thing that I need to consider is the stock. I've got half a dozen stock blanks, but the stock that I've been making for a different build has been taking months, and I'm a little burned out. I'm seriously thinking about ordering a prefit stock from Richards.
This thread about 35 caliber rifles is just some fuel on the fire making me want to build this rifle even more. Some rifles get built as range queens, others as varminters, but this one is going to traipse across hills and meadows in search of game. It's going to be make specifically for hunting.
