Just got an email from Raven Rocks. One of their email features is Norma .35 Whelen brass. $1.50 per. That's some serious shooting.

It doesn't get much easier than that.

That's interesting and has got to be a big help. I don't shoot anything rifle larger than .22x now although I threaten now and then to maybe go as high as .24x. So I don't know anything about these other than recognizing the name and believing they are considered a quite good round.

I say follow Larry's advice, and report back. I've been enamored with 3/8 bore stuff for a while, the 375 whelen has always intrigued me. Let her rip!!!

    Greetings,

I don't know if this is actually the voice of reason, or me wanting to learn more... I read Michael Petrov's stuff when he was publishing regularly in Accurate Rifle / Tactical Shooter. I'd love to hear more about someone making up a .400 Whelen, particularly for cast bullet use.

As noted, there would be some things that need attention. I'd say if that's your interest, go for it.

On a slightly more reasonable note, I think the 375-06 was mentioned in Wolfe's Pet Loads or Wildcat Cartridges book. It might be slightly easier to work with, but there's still be a big honkin' piece of lead coming out the business end.

Either way, I'd say go for it.

    Best

Need has nothing to do with this hobby. If it did We'd all have one rimfire, one shotgun, probably a pump, and a bolt action rifle in 300 Win mag.
Having said that, the 400 Whelen is famous for lack of a shoulder to support the round. The 375 Whelen has moderate support, but the 35 has the most. I have a 35 Whelen, it started as a VZ75. After getting it chambered and stocked I decided to concentrate on left hand actions for my LH body. I built a 416 Taylor on a LH 338 action, took it to Africa in '24 and killed 3 game animals, one a Zebra, nice Buffalo and a book Kudu.
But need never entered the picture.

Actually it isn’t. That is a myth created by men that did it wrong.

I have a Mark X and Springfield 03 converted to 35 Whelen. Plenty of shoulder left on the cartridge for “flawless” ejection and plenty of power for anything in North America IMHO.

My 80 year old then dad shot his Maine bull moose in 2013 with a 35 Whelen. One shot at 175 yards, two or three steps on down.
