That is what I understood at first. And know that can't be it. So the question of chemical reaction. My research online combining the products of black powder's combustion and the typical lubes doesn't show anything that would impact Hi Tek. I'm not a chemist but I don't see anything.

Finally got out to the range with some 168 gn bullets coated with Hi Tek for the 300 PRC. Mold was a Lee 312 185 C1R. Lead was lino at 22 BHN. These shots were done off hand so didn't expect real tight groups. But out of the eight different loads and two different powders. Three loads are showing promise, around 1.5 in at a little over 50 yards. These bullets in the higher loads would have been going over 3000 fps. Took a quick look at the barrel and, as expected, no apparent leading. Heat was really on for these. It was 80 F in the open not even a breeze. And the barrel after five shots was so hot you couldn't touch it. Had only an hour to shoot so no time to cool it. That probably added a little to the spread on the loads. And the stress on the Hi Tek.

I tried some 230 gn bullets in a softer BHN, about 14, out of a NOE mold some time ago. Those in the two different powders and several different loads just never got me any where close to a good group. The softer lead and pointy bullet I thought were the culprit. The lead in the middle to high loads was exploding about 10 yards out of the barrel. Worked for months on a tougher alloy that also could be used to hunt. Still working on that one. Finally just cast the 168 gn 1R out of lino. No hunting bullet but did hold up to the torque, heat and speed better. I have never had any luck with pointy bullets in lead. Speeds were over 2600 fps with the 230 gn from memory. Hi Tel kept the lead out of the barrel on those, too.
While I work at it, it is by God's grace that it happens. So it is best I ask him what, how and when before I start..

Just to confirm what you said, the coating is cured at 180C. Baking for hours afterwards only turns color to Black, but coated alloy is well bonded to alloy, shoots perfectly and no bore residues.
I doubt that gun bores would get to 180C, but would get hot enough not to be able to handle them. Over about 50 to 60 C the metal would be barely touchable, but those temperatures would not have much affect on coating for the very short time being in contact with the hot bore. The heat generated on barrel during firing is mainly from the powder and not much contribution from friction.
The 180C cure heat is strong enough to set the coating, which becomes very inert and non-reactive, so other chemicals or gasses produced from burning powder should not be expected to be reactive to the coating. I dont know if you had watched the video produced a while ago, that the melting lead with a Propane torch, the Lead simply ran out of the coating, leaving the shape of the cast as coating shell floating on the melted alloy.

Just for my own entertainment i left a 9mm bullet, coated, probably twenty cycles in the oven. It was much darker.

I have many times said that the performance of Hi Tek is of more value to me than the colors. But I would like to say Joe we all appreciate your company's hard work to bring us those colors.

    over bake.jpg

Here is the 168 gn coated and baked twice with 1035 Gold. As you can see it is obviously over baked. This is also a mix that has been sitting in my basement for three months plus. Old mix is another thing that will change the color in my opinion.

    Baked.jpg

This is a photo of the 230 gn bullet three coats. Again over baked. The bullet on the left is a failed alloy bullet that slumped when baked. Pretty color though.

Some of the failed alloy actually ran out of the Hi Tek coating onto the shield over the heat coils in my oven. Leaving the Hi Tek shell in the tray. And as some others have I have skimmed Hi Tek off the surface of a melt when recasting.

If I can remember to do it I will take my thermometer to the range and check the temp of the barrel after five rounds. Might be a good figure to have.

    Oh well.

    I'm puzzled.

I keep being told how badly off my Hi Tek colours are.

Here you can see Kryptonite, TMG and Fire Red. I'm being told these are wrong. They all shoot fine and look good enough for me... it is true that a lot of pic quality depends on the lightning... but still, this is getting boring after eight years of my succesful coating and shooting with Hi Tek.

Here is YZ2 that shoots clean 45-70 @ 2100 fps. Yeah I can not get it "TMG-transparent" but Joe,please stop pulling your hair, please stop worrying. These are the prettiest I can do and I'm happy with these. It must be my Niobium contaminant,I have also stopped acid washing the bullets before coating.

All this "Beauty Contest" type feedback has caused unnecessary pressure on me. I will post pics no more.

Colors look great to me. I am an overtaker so I never get the right color. They all shoot fine with no leading so I am happy.

Dito DDriller. I like the colors you are showing. And really like your guns.

If you take the time to mix fresh coating and watch carefully the bake time and temp you can do any color. Except maybe blue. I had trouble getting that one to not turn green.

    They look beautiful Petander!!!
(Oh, see Finland in the margin, were Neighbours Pet - Sweden here)

But then again I literally tried every way of lubing imagineable down to every powder and I cant imagine theres anything that even comes close to the performance or beauty of Joe Ban's Hi-tek Supercoating!

Why were you acid washing (& with what?) your cast?

May the force be with you mates!

Just finishing a 2nd bake cycle of the first bullets I used hitec on. First coat I thought was splotchy and not done correctly until I baked them. Actually turned out pretty good and passed both tests for adhearing. Been doing pc for a few years and tired of dominoe’s with tall bullets while going into the oven. I like that I can do larger batches and not add to diameter of the bullet. Gonna take a few cycles to get the bugs worked out but am pretty happy with results so far.

The first coat being splotchy is normal, if you get the first too thick it can lead to flaking. The coat has to be thoroughly dry for success. I have been using Hi-tek for about 15 years with great results.

Last bullets coated. First coat before bake. If you enlarge you will see spots where lead is showing through the coating.

    This is after first bake.

And before you say it yes I know they are over baked. This is also some coating I mixed up sometime ago.

IIRC, J&M Specialized Products, HiTek inventor Joe Ban’s own company in Australia, has recently been selling direct internationally. Try reaching them directly (I think they have a Facebook page).

Hey I'm new to this forum but I was looking for some help. I've got a Spam can of 762 ammo? It's pretty old unopened. I'm trying to sell and I also got 14 3 lb 10 oz bars of pure 10 I'm trying to get rid of. Can you point me in the right direction?

If you were planning on selling the ammo it is illegal to sell it in the US unless your a FFL. You can give it away. I had a friend that doesn't load ammo ask to load some for him and he would pay me. I had to decline the payment offer. It is also illegal to manufacture ammo for sale. Did offer to load some for free.

Now the lead is a whole different story. Go to the home page of this forum. Look toward the bottom of the page. There is a "Swapping and Selling"section. But there are some conditions. Probably a good idea to look at selling on Ebay, too.

And let me say we welcome you to the forum.
