That is what I understood at first. And know that can't be it. So the question of chemical reaction. My research online combining the products of black powder's combustion and the typical lubes doesn't show anything that would impact Hi Tek. I'm not a chemist but I don't see anything.
Finally got out to the range with some 168 gn bullets coated with Hi Tek for the 300 PRC. Mold was a Lee 312 185 C1R. Lead was lino at 22 BHN. These shots were done off hand so didn't expect real tight groups. But out of the eight different loads and two different powders. Three loads are showing promise, around 1.5 in at a little over 50 yards. These bullets in the higher loads would have been going over 3000 fps. Took a quick look at the barrel and, as expected, no apparent leading. Heat was really on for these. It was 80 F in the open not even a breeze. And the barrel after five shots was so hot you couldn't touch it. Had only an hour to shoot so no time to cool it. That probably added a little to the spread on the loads. And the stress on the Hi Tek.
I tried some 230 gn bullets in a softer BHN, about 14, out of a NOE mold some time ago. Those in the two different powders and several different loads just never got me any where close to a good group. The softer lead and pointy bullet I thought were the culprit. The lead in the middle to high loads was exploding about 10 yards out of the barrel. Worked for months on a tougher alloy that also could be used to hunt. Still working on that one. Finally just cast the 168 gn 1R out of lino. No hunting bullet but did hold up to the torque, heat and speed better. I have never had any luck with pointy bullets in lead. Speeds were over 2600 fps with the 230 gn from memory. Hi Tel kept the lead out of the barrel on those, too.
