Back in my day we used a handful of snow in the winter and birch bark in the summer. Maple leaves if there were no birch around.

I mix up Ed's using ATF/Kerosine/Mineral Spirits. I just changed the ATF in my F250 and have 6 qts of used ATF. No metal flakes or anything just a little dark from use. Any downside from using it instead of new ATF? Will it work as well?

It's cheap. Buy new. That way you are positive there is nothing in it.

I made a batch a while back, never heard that synthetic would not mix. I used synthetic ATF, K-1, mineral spirits and lanolin. I stored it in an old brown Clorox bottle. After it sets a while I can see the separation. I shake up the jug and the small bottle I use. It still seems to work but next batch will be conventional ATF.

Both my parents, all my uncle's and aunt's were products of the Great Depression. This area was economically depressed even before the 1929. My maternal grandmother, raised in the mountains of NC had it even worse. They threw away nothing, might be a part on it that can be used. Believe me, you don't want to clean out the house and out buildings after they pass.

And it spills over into the next generation.

Dang. The Yankee in me raised by people who lived through the Great Depression just doesn't want to throw out 6 qts of used ATF. Must be good for something.

Every time I post about Ed's Red bore cleaner I make sure to mention Not to use Synthetic ATF ...because it won't mix ... But Nobody Listen's to Me!
Maybe learning the "Hard Way" will do the job !

I’ve read about filtering used oil with a cotton rope. Use it as a wick and let gravity transfer it to a clean vessel over a month or so.

Cheapness?

In the small town I grew up in, there was one major manufacturer who employed about 500 people, +/-50. NOBODY was as tight / cheap as the people who worked there. They would one-up each other with the deals they got wherever on a new pickup.

They would drive 13 mi one-way to save 3 cents each on 2x4s, instead of buying from one or both in-town lumber yards. Thjs was when pickups got 8-10 mpg in the late 60s and through the 70s and into the 80s.

Seven of them got together on a truckload of IKO shingles from Canada to save $1300 total amongst the seven of them over buying from a local lumberyard. They had the shingles delivered to the plant, and stored them in a company pole barn until they worked their way through seven installations. Turns out the IKO shingles were defective and aged rapidly, requiring replacement in 4-5 years. So they got another truckload, but no settlement from IKO because the bad shingles were not professionally installed. But they saved ~$1300 and $1500 (2nd truckload) amongst the seven of them, and that's all that mattered.

In grade and high school, the children of the plant workers were instructed to "hold it" until after getting to school, so that they would use the school's water, TP, and soap.

I always thought my relatives were cheap for using the sears catalog in the little shack out back. Now I see they were well off. my father was in the market for a new fishing pole. we went out on an excursion to look at poles most every Friday night for several years before he bought anything. The gas we spent could have bought 2 or 3 fishing poles.
