Melting LBT Bullet Lube

Greetings,

Has anyone melted down LBT Blue or Commercial Lube?

My concern is will melting damage the product.

I have some odd shaped sticks I purchased at the last Goon Show.

Hoping to pour the liquid into plastic tubes so I can use them in my Star Greaser.

Does it have to be heated to apply it in the lubesizer? If yes, I can’t see how melting it just to the point it’s flowable to pour into tubes would hurt it at all as it’s meant to be heated.

Even if it’s not required to be heated to apply-as long as you keep the time and temp controlled to only that necessary, it shouldn’t harm it.

Some would just leave those odd sticks of lube in the warm sun and then put them in the Star while still warm. Apply pressure and some of the air space will leak out and some will not. Is it a real problem if the system "burps" a little gas while you lube and size.

Good point Dusty-shouldn’t have to absolutely liquify them and pour them into the molds-as long as they’re soft enough to form by hand either pushing them into the tube molds or right into the lube-sizer.

I would recommend using a double boiler for hearting for several reasons. One is safety as it will reduce the chance of a fire. Two it will reduce the chance of scorching or over heating the lube. 3 a disposable container can be used making clean up easier.

I use a soup can and my heat gun. Pour into the reservoir.

At one time Veral said melting down the hard blue and adding 1 spoonful (I don't remember if he said tea or table) of STP oil treatment was how to convert it to the soft version. I take that to mean carefully melting it won't hurt anything

If no heat gun on hand ... Hair Dryer will do the job .

Not that big of deal for pistol. People give me odd lube and when I have enough I mix it in an old LEE pot. If too hard from being old I add mineral spirits and when the mix seems right pour into a jar with a lid. I make the lube soft -Like White Label orange for the Star lube sizer. You don't want a hard lube in the Star. I bought mine used about 20 years ago and still no leaks. To me the blue is too hard for a Star. You can tell by how much pressure it takes to turn. If too hard heat the sizer. A Star will lube about 8 wad cutters before you have to adjust the pressure when things are right.
