    22TCM 9R Mold?

Hi, I saw Rock Island had some 22TCM 9R conversion kits on sale, so I bought one.

Is anyone loading for the 9R version? Looks like it needs a tiny short bullet. Has to fit in a 9mm length magazine I guess.

I found a couple of boxes of loaded ammo, but I'm guessing the brass might be hard to find after shooting.

I thought maybe I could use some 9mm Win mag, but the base is too big and won't fit in the die
I chopped some 223 brass and annealed it. The cases formed easily enough, but the neck walls are too thick.

I tried some chucking reamers, a .338" looks like it will do nicely. I'll probably set it up in the drill press to keep the depth consistant and internal capacity close to the same.

I didn't clean the brass up after using the torch, so it's a little ugly, and I may have used too much lube.

What I really need is a bullet to shoot in it.
Anyone have a good suggestion for a mold that will fit in a 9mm magazine?

The 9R version is shorter to fit in 9mm Glock magazines. At least that's my understanding.
Concerning a mold, no clue, sorry
We used to give 9mm's to the women and kids. Now that everybody is running 9mm's as their primary, maybe we need to give the women and kids .32's so we can keep feeling manly. -Bigslug

I load for mine. 9R means 9mm replacement. Bullet is finicky. .224 bullet specially made for the round used to be available. Now it is a bit hard to fine. I use .218 Bee (.224 diameter) bullet. It works quite alright. Pistol is a Glock 23 with conversion barrel and slide. The round has too marginal recoil (bullet too light) to cycle the action. I have to use heavy charge of slow powder to "rocket" the slide back, so it is loud and flashy.

Is that a .218 Bee cast bullet? or jacketed one?
I have some 40 grain Speer for the 22 Hornet, but they are kind of pointy. Maybe I could file the noses flat like the 22lr small game bullets?

I found some 33gn Speer Hornet bullets at Midway. I'll give them a try.

It looks like there is an Ideal 225438 mold that might work.

That NOE bullet looks great, but is all sold out. I'll see how the MP mold does. He usually ships pretty fast. I'll have to get a pile of 223 brass cut and reamed.

Jacketed hollow point. FP is the best as it shortens the ogive the most.

The ogive could be too long, but it may work.

I like this one the most. FP with short ogive. I haven't tried loading with cast bullet. It may have more of issue cycling the action as mv is limited.

I'm wondering how the Lyman 225438 would do. IIRC it was basically a gas checked copy of a .22 Long Rifle bullet at ~43 grains.

Been a while since I cast any of them so I don't have any length measurements to give you.

I'm watching a couple of 225438 molds, hoping one will not go crazy high.

What about the nose length? The 9R version has to fit in a 9mm Glock magazine.

Cast length is supposed to be 1.022"
The regular 22TCM cartridge length is 1.265"
I'm not seeing a spec for the 9R, but whatever will fit in a 9mm Glock magazine I guess?

Yes, it must fit in a 9mm mag and feed reliably. The brass neck must be on the bearing surface behind the ogive. One trick is to trim the brass neck slightly shorter, similar to .357 sig. It is ok as the cartridge is headspaced on shoulder, or it can be made to do so.

I found a Lyman 225438 double cavity with handles on Ebay that looked pretty good. I'll have to try that along with the MP mold.

I could be 100% incorrect, but here goes anyway. Looking at that mould and comparing it to the round of factory 9R ammo, it's going to be too long.
Hopefully I'm wrong and it works great, time will tell.

I’m loading .22 TCM for my RIA 1911, so my overall lengths are generally longer than standard .22 TCM 9R (1.16"?). The best functional and accuracy results with cast bullets so far have been with the Lee Bator 55 gr RF, seated to a COAL of 1.19". This length still feeds reliably in the 9mm 1911 magazines, though it may be too long for Glock magazines (not tested). With a Hornady gas check applied after powder coating, the bullets weigh 51 grains and are sized to .224. My current load is 8.2 grains of Vihtavuori N110, giving a muzzle velocity of approximately 1620 fps and producing 2–3 inch groups at 30 yards.

I also tested the current Lee 55 gr FN design (shown on the right), but it appears to be on the edge of stability in this setup and would be too long for .22 TCM 9R anyway.
