Lyman lube question

Has any one else had trouble with the Lyman stick lube not sticking in the lube groves of boolits, have others had this problem or did I just get bad luck. any input also what is the best way to get it out of the sizer as i dont think i want to continue as it falls out of the groves when handling for loading

Hey Cast, what kind of Lyman lube is it? Is it old stuff? Some lubes I have used are pretty sticky and unless I stack the boolits in neat rows the lube comes crawling out of the grooves.

I have used the old original Ideal lube for ML and lower velocity pistol and revolver cartridges , sticks fine and always has . I have used and currently have probably a dozen sticks of Orange Magic that I got from my Dad's stuff. The only thing about it that would be considered Magic is if I could figure out how to lube bullets , box then for later use and figure out how to store them where half or more of the lube does not fall out of the grooves before I get around to using them. I learned long ago to only lube enough bullets for the number of cartridges I intend to load that day. As long as you do that , it works fine.

The lube is Lyman is all I know it’s black it came in the lubsizer I just started to use it because it was convenient I made some home brew stuff from my dad’s old notes with my Own spin on it think I’m going to put it in there is
I think I read somewhere on the forum that boiling it works to remove old lube from it is that a good choice

This sounds like the Lyman Moly lube looks, black. I got a stick, or rather a tube of it along with 4 of the orange stuff. They’re all melted into the inside of the plastic tubes…

Yup , that works but usually is a bit messy . Pull the die and the pressure nut so there's no rubber involved . I have also used a heat gun with moderate heat after removing the afore mentioned items . Heat it and then dump it and heat it some more while it's upside down. Takes a little work but it eventually comes out . I usually scrap the first few bullets I size just incase there's any residual lube .

Two things you can try ...
1.) Warm the lube / sizer body with with a shop light . heat lamp or hair dryer to get good lube flowage and help stickiness .
2.) cast boolits so they have a light "frosty" texteure to the boolit surface ...
thie helps lube stick and stay in place .
If that doesn't work ... Buy New Lube !

Just back the piston out all the way, pull the sizing die out and put a container under the sizer to catch melted lube and hold a heat gun on it. Only takes 15 minutes or so for the lube to melt and drip out. ( unless the reservoir is full of course)
If you don’t have a heat gun shine a heat lamp on it- it will just take longer.

A possible cure for the lube not sticking in the grooves. Warm the bullets before lubesizing. The warm bullet will help the glue get a bit tacky and it will stay in the grooves better once they cool

This sounds a LOT less messy than boiling…. Mine has a heater-running it would preheat and probably help disassembly and removal.

I had a couple sticks of old black Lyman ideal lube with old Lyman 450 that I started with. IIRC it was in a stiff product that migrated out to the lube grooves if the boolits were bounced around much. I think in came in a red cardboard box with the stick wrapped in wax paper. Not knowing any better, I just loaded some 50/50 beeswax-alox on top of it. I had brown and black striped lube grooves for a while until it worked itself out. Makes me laugh now that I think about it.

I’ll have to clean out my new to me 4500 from the black goop that’s in it and load it with my White Label C160 lube soon-glad to hear the heat gun trick works.

As an addendum to that last post I placed the unit after removing the Handel and ram upside down in a coffee tin with one of the large vice grip clamps around it to hold it up Tim worked great as a catch and paper towel to remove much of the residual from anywhere I could before the boiling water was poured through getting almost all the remaining lube out I recommend you do this out side over a weed you want dead thanks for all the advice everyone was very helpful

I have only ever used Lyman Orange Magic of the Lyman brand lubes. I have a heater and I use it. The lube has never refused to go in or stay in the grooves of either gas checked or plain based boolits.
