Blackhorn 209 Going Forward

Since Hodgdon has purchased Bh 209 from Western what do most think will happen to availability and price ? Western had it priced at 180.00 $ per pound which I found totally unacceptable and having said that, I also believe it to be a great product. Dr. C

They have priced it at the upper limit of what muzzle loader hunters will pay. The $90 1/2 lb canister will last those ppl several years.

It could be the TrailBoss of black powder cartridges, but not the way it’s currently priced. Low sales volume may lead to its demise, or the market will be starved for it to keep prices high.

The SR powders that were great in black powder cartridges seem to have been conveniently eliminated at the same time. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

I think people will figure out that T7 works as well, but it’s a pain to have to swab between each shot…only a minor inconvenience. CVA is now selling smokeless muzzle loaders and I expect sales of those to skyrocket. On the other hand, the actual use of BH209 is minimal if you just use it for hunting and not target shooting. Once sighted in, taking a couple of shots prior to going hunting, and then going hunting, that 8oz bottle will still go a long ways. I used two shots this year to kill a nice buck. One to verify it’s still sighted in, and one to shoot a deer. For the side lock crowd, BH209 is a rip off. Just too expensive for plinking and casual shooting.

I agree with the comments and hate it as well. I use the stuff in metallic ctgs with cast bullets and absolutely love it in every bp ctg that Win chambers in the 1886. Their web page shows a 5# container for $300.00. I ordered and it's not available. Dr.C

Since it's basically a smokeless powder, it's not permitted in the game I play. I still prefer real black. Easiest to clean, and if your guns are set up right, no problems with fouling or other old wives' tales.

I'll stick with the Holy Black - I saw the price for that stuff at CAL Ranch and about choked. If I run out of black, I'll make some.

I get 1.25 MOA 5 shot groups out of a Thompson Omega with Harvester black crush sabots shooting .452 250 gr FTX in a 50 cal with 80 grains (Volume). Can shoot 20 rounds at the range between cleanings. I love the stuff, just glade I bought a big jug before covid.

Truth be told, my crossbow has pretty much replaced muzzleloaders for actual hunting use. Don't get me wrong, I still love them, but our muzzleloader season is a grand total of 11 days whereas crossbow is roughly 105, and I'm blessed to be able to go hunting an awful lot.
