How am I doing so far?

I've been a long time lurker since I started reloading in 2014. I immediately said no to paper patching due to it being " time consuming " and dealing with one bullet at a time.

Now that I'm a grown up 🤣, I decided to learn how to roll my own to achieve high velocity for hunting and or longer distance shooting. ( But hunting is FIRST priority)

My rifle barrel is kinda tight, pound cast came back at 307.5 3 times and measured with different calipers/bullets.

I'm currently patching bullets that have found themselves in the " ooopsie " box to be messed with a later date. ( Weird lube, not ideal castings, crooked checks) These are basically bullets I couldn't powder coat

I found a 308 sizing die, took my bullets I sized at 309 and resized to 308. Soaked my patch in dawn soap water.( Light blue )

I'm using 20+ year old continuous computer paper, 20 lb. IDK what is in this paper but it behaves COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the 20lb trash paper we use for our printer at home.

Lube will be 50/50 bees wax and coconut oil.

Final size will be 309. Powder will be 43 grains of h335. Book claims it would be 2400 fps. I picked that charge just to see if my patches leave the bullet and I don't get leading.

The only thing I did, on accident, is wrap the patch against the barrel grooves.i realized that after I started making really nice bullets. I speculate it will help the thicker paper leave the bullet compared to 15lb green bar paper.

I'm very interested in anyone's feedback who patches for 30 cal

**** I can't upload pictures from my phone, 😑 I'll upload them later when I have my computer

    Why?

If you are going to do all the work to test how PP works why start with defective bullets?

I'm fixing the bullets as I patch them.
Some have alox I can't remove
    Some have wax
Some have a gas check I'm reseating

They were bullets I wanted to experiment with, small batches of 10 to 50 of various coatings before I started powder coating

I came across 1 bullet that had a wrinkle in it on the nose and I sacrificed it for testing the sizing with paper

No matter what I do I can't upload pictures so I guess I'll just consider this thread to be dead.

I'll be getting out the near future to shoot them. The only thing I'm slightly curious of is using the heavier paper but I feel like wrapping against the barrel twist would help get the paper off of the bullet. I'm hoping that the paper is strong enough it won't try to unravel itself in the barrel like some people claim

Looks like your ends are butted up nicely and not overlapping, which is a big no-no.
The noses are a wrapped too long.
The end should start where just the paper is engraved by the bore diameter.
When it gets cut it can spread apart and not be held by a solid wrap where emerging from the crown.
Either make the tails longer and twist tight when wet to dry or have them shorter and twist and sit them on the base to dry.
This will allow the base to be held together when seating and not get puffed out and pushed up as the bullet gets pushed through the throat.

I give it abit of a go once.
Never really quite cracked it like over people.

    Good luck with it.
I used some lined note paper that wasn’t too bad.

I kinda noticed the paper was too long, but my concern was the paper catching on the magazine to my m760.

When you are finished playing around.
Put your bullets back through the lead pot again.

Feeding through the magazine unharmed is your second concern.

Your first concern is shredding the paper, making confetti, and having the paper leave the bullet. (The paper needs to leave the bullet.)

I guess I don't know what I said to make you leave a reply like that.

For what it's worth, I planned on trimming the front of the bullets. Those are fresh off the drying rack.

When I finish my canvas job I'm doing right now I'll post pictures of what I loaded up

OK, let us know how the trimming works out. I've only done paper patch for a fat 7.62x39 where I didn't have a mold big enough. I rolled tracing paper just forward of the front drive band. I was rewarded with confetti and groups that went from 12"at 100 to 4" at 100.

I'm hoping the fact I rolled the 20lb paper against the twist of the rifling will help ensure the paper comes off.

barrabruce, if you told me to redo my bullets because of that white stuff on the ranch dog bullet looking like it's white with corrosion, that's actually nu-finish stained to the bullet. It comes off with a Terry cloth

I was making my wraps based off of this video. The gent is shooting 1000 yard.

I'm my mind I assumed a chunk of the patch missing is horrible once it gets shoved into the barrel.

I'm speculating. I'm a seasoned powder coater not paper patcher

you might want to take a close look at the first sticky entitled "Paper Patching: What Works for Me" by P Dawg Shooter ... He describes sizing the boolit to just over land diameter rather than groove diameter. Land dia. on a .30 caliber cartridge is normally around .300" to .302". He then patches the undersize boolit up to where paper thickness allows two wraps of wet paper to dry and fit into the neck of a fired piece of brass. This may be problematic on a pump Remington, but it seems to work with bolt actions with the extra camming/closing of the action. It does involve lapping out a smaller die to the required land diameter plus .0015" or so. I used a Lee pushthru of .285" dia.and it went fairly quickly.

I read pdawgs stuff, I'll go down that road if I can't get my current stuff to work.

The way I currently patched the bullet, it compresses the body damn near perfect per my calipers

    well, the verdict is in.

i had to cut off the front paper of the bullets i loaded, it didnt let me chamber the rounds in the pump action.

i very poorly cut them on the bench at sarah park, i tried to cut it straight with the first drive band, the paper cut wonky on every bullet because thats my luck...

a very shaky shooter, who forgot the rear bag for the butt stock, got 1 7/8 group at 100 yards.

bullet was sized to 308 before wrapping in paper, sized to 309 afterwards. 43grains of H335( surplus type ) load should have been 2400 fps or more.

im going to load up some of the virgin bullets i have, and take some back out this week with a lead sled and see what happens.

needless to say, im pretty happy with the results.

4 rounds went into that 1 7/8 group,

For any of you following this still. My paper compresses the bullet to 297/298. In the process I believe it semi compromises the paper around the lube groves.

Conveniently, Lee has a 298 sizer for the " buster " system or the new style bullet sizer system.

I ordered 2 of them on Monday, they should be here soon and I'll post pictures of the new bullets.i ordered 2 because they were cheap and I feel like 1 of them will be honed out to 300. My lands at the muzzle measure 298/296 but I feel like that's only a starting point, calipers in a barrel is kinda like a clown dance

I'm shooting for 2500 fps but would like 26/2700 since this is my hunting gun
