A little input here for those who maybe have used WC-852 Lot # 47287…

The info on the 8-pound jug says use IMR-4831 data, but I sometimes think that it could be a bit closer to the 4350s…

Has anyone done enough chronographing of this powder to compare its burn rate to 4831 or 4350…

I suppose start out with 4350 data and go from there…

I know application and cartridge size could matter, but, I’m sort of concerned with using it in a 30-40 Krag. T/C Encore…26” MGM barrel…

According to my burn rate chart WC-852 has the same burn rate as H-380 and is very close to Staball 6.5. It is slightly faster than IMR 4350 but there is some confusion in the charts. It lists H-4350 as SLOWER than IMR-4831.

I would use starting IMR-4350 data and a chronograph is required to work up.

852 has been a bit of a puzzle for years. The best advice I ever got was to go by lot number as the lots varied lot to lot. The best advice I got on 852 was from the guy in Kentucky who sells surplus powders ( I can't remember his name offhand ).

I have bought kegs of surplus powder but even then using a sellers description of burn rate, and even loads, for a powder was risky without a chrony. There may be some lot number info on some of the most popular powders like with the original release of AA2200 but even then I would just use them for starting loads. And burn rates can change with the various cartridges.

If you want to reload surplus powders for cheap there is no longer an excuse for not having a chrony. I will never look back on having a Doppler unit but you should be able to find a used old school shoot over unit for $100 or less. Considering the cost of new powder it will be a bargain.

I seem to remember an 852 and an 852 F faster lot. Chronos are your friend.
