    Gun Magazines

    Gun Magazines.
The kind you read, not what some call clips.
Over the years I have subscribed to several different ones, usually one at a time. When I had more than one coming each month it was hard for me to pick a favorite. If you subscribe to more than one, What is your favorite? Why?

Only one I still get, and read, is American Rifleman.
    Life member.
We have only one book store on this island.
    Don't go there much anymore.
Other places that still have books/magazines, stopped carrying anything firearm related.
    Sad.

Growing up I loved American Rifleman and Field and Stream. Not so much now. I don't even read my monthly NRA e-mag most of the time.

I currently subscribe to eight printed gun magazines, Handloader, Rifle, Black Powder Cartridge News, Guns, Shooting Times, the American Rifleman, Guns and Ammo and the Armory Life. I retain and archive the first 3, all Wolfe publications, and have subscribed to them for over 30 years. I've gotten the American Rifleman for the last 50 years. My favorite is Handloader because it aligns closely with my greatest interests, reloading, casting and shooting, and consistently has the most articles per issue that really enjoy written by the top writers.

I occasionally keep some of the non-Wolfe magazines if they have articles worth saving. All the archived magazines are kept in clear plastic totes after a flood ruined some of my shed stored library, and particularly in the winter months, I'll pull a random tote a re-read the old issues. Instead of trashing the ones I'm finished with, they are passed on to friends.

Over the years, I've sometimes become dissatisfied with Guns and Ammo and Shooting Times and let their subscriptions lapse. After a while, I restarted both after receiving "offers I couldn't refuse." Both these magazines have undergone near complete makeovers brought on by new editorial staff and writers, and I believe are much better publications. Guns and Ammo really disgusted me years ago being filled with shallow, poorly written advertisements for the products they were supposed to be objectively reviewing, plus being solely devoted to ugly black plastic junk, but they have done a 100% revamp for the good.

Precision Shooting until they went out of business. Still get the Rifleman because I'm a life member.
Never did get any of the others, most are just gun propaganda to me.

Well, reading is a great way to keep learning stuff & often allows you to see things you may not realize is out there. Magazines are great for that.

I have,, over the decades,, subscribed to most of them out there.

But currently,, I get American Rifleman, American Hunter, (2 life members here,) Handloading, American Handgunner, USPSA Front Sight, Fur, Fish & Game.

Many of the REAL gun writers have given passed away,, and only a few real ones exist. Most recently, John Taffin passed away.

And sadly,, many of the magazines have gotten to where they write articles "praising & fluffing up" whatever they choose to write about. Objective writing has suffered in so many places,, to where it's almost gone. But occasionally we do find good stuff, and by getting magazines,, we'll hopefully get the good stuff!

used to subscribe to nine - now only get American Rifleman [ life member ] - jmho quality, bias, + honesty of articles + writers extremely lacking - with Taffin gone, now Garry James is the last of the old school left -
never pick a fight with an old man - if he is too old to fight he will just kill you -
in this current crisis our government is not the solution , it is the problem ! -

Ditto on Rifle and Handloader. I have back issues dating back over 30 years.
I used to enjoy Guns and Ammo. I still go to the back issues of Handloader and Rifle to find information.
Go now and pour yourself a hot one...

Handloader now, Precision Shooting before they were gone, we get American Rifleman and American Hunter because I am an Endowment member and wife is Life Member since the 70's. I get a few others, mostly based on subscription deals, some I have tried and found wanting. Firearms have not really advanced very far in the last 50 years from a practical standpoint, most publications same stuff over and over, memory still to good to enjoy another articla on how great a bolt action 270, 30-06, 6.5 Creedmore..... on and on, the .40 is dead, the 30-30 bounces off deer, the awesome .223. Precision machining providing greatest gains, but not really reflected in most publications. Oh Boy, what a great rifle, Killed a deer at 150 yards.

I currently subscribe to Handloader and Rifle. Get American Rifleman as a consequence of being an NRA life member. I'm paying a little more attention to AR now that they removed the grifter from management, though they still need to clean house.

My favorite is Handloader. I also subscribe to Guns and American Handgunner however the print versions will be going away soon, so my subscription will too. I also get American Rifleman, but it's my least favorite, Outside of the historical articles and the pieces by Bruce Canfield, there's not much there.

I'm not into the latest super duper whiz bang cartridges or their launch platforms, nor do I care for the 10 newest plastic handguns of the month.

With Taffin and Venturino gone, a huge hole has been left for readers of traditional firearms information.
Proud member in the basket of deplorables.

I've got the itch, but don't got the scratch.
