century mas 36 converted to .308

So I found one of these... whats the real story on them. I know sks style safety was added. are they really safe for .308win.
or are they really only good for 762x51?

also.. I can tell the barrel was set back say half an inch..guessing to recut chamber..but what did they do for the bore? im assuming no re barrel..just setback and .308 is good to fly based on 7.84mm/.309 original bullet?

The .308 is similar in pressure to the 7.5 French cartridge; so if the chambering job was done correctly- it should be ok.

I think I'll stay on the safe side and go 7.62x51 and see how the bolt feels afterwards.

Coming from personal experience, if Century did the work, fire the first round on a strap down stand with a string to the trigger.

I may even load up some trail boss test liads for the first couple shots to see what the chamber looks like. nive heard sone of their conversions didnt fully cut the new chamber in if it wasn't set back enough.

jmho - Century sold very large quantity of them + i do not recall anyone complain about them - some of the French semi auto rifles they converted to .308 had extraction problems -

The case rims of 7.5 and .308/7.62x51 are different sizes. I had two come through the shop and both suffered from failure to extract.

iirc - that problem was only om the semi auto ones + not the bolt models -

I just left the range with my 36, and it shoots 7.62, just fine, case Look good extracts correctly.

I had one, quite some time ago. The forend also had to be shortened the same half inch, and as I recall they'd simply cut that much off the rear of the wood. Unfortunately there was some geometry that locked the wood onto the front of the receiver, which got cut off as well. That left the forend captive, but able to slide back & forth 1/8" or so, between the receiver and the front band. When I fired it, the recoil momentarily opened up that 1/8" gap between the forend and the receiver, which got a grip on the skin of my hand, and bit me.

I found an original forend, shortened it at the *front*, and spent hours & hours recontouring everything to be like the original at both ends, but 1/2" shorter. That worked, and I was a happy camper.

Then I found out Century had mashed a flat spot about 8" into the bore, apparently by overtightening whatever tooling they used to hold the barrel for set back & rechambering.

I traded the rifle to a dealer. So somewhere out there, there is a single converted MAS 36 with a correctly converted forend.

I saw a Mas 36 converted by Wiselite Arms to 7.62x39 using a M1919 MG barrel.
It thought it to be neat and dumb simultaneously(heavy!)……

yes, they did an axe job onbthe rear of tge forehead. mine won't open up..but is noticeably loose compared to a non converted 36.
I nade up some 150gr cast, gas checked rounds over 20gr imr 4198. lyman said 13000 psi and 1717 fps. shot fantastic..felt great..not really a reduced load..just a mild one. im sure it would still pop a pig. the low psi was what I was after..wanted to get away from the 60k end of the 7.62 range since 7.5 French was a 55k psi gun.. 13k should be easy for that converted action.
