    Delrin rod for Trapdoor Question

Can anyone tell me, would a 1/4” diameter delrin rod be flexible enough to run into the Trapdoor breech and out through the muzzle?

I would like to make a breech cleaning rod if possible. I cannot find any delrin rod locally; I will have to order it, and just wanted to check first to see if anyone has tried this.

    Thanks!

Well it might, if I have a pretty good idea before I order that it will work!

Use a fired case with the flash hole drilled out to slip fit on the rod. The case in the chamber will better keep the rod centered.

1/4" will be too flexible. Put any restriction on the business end and it will try to wad-up on you, and you will find yourself fighting the Beast. 5/16" would be minimum in my view.

I do like the idea for the rod guide to help prevent any wear. The rod would likely pick up and hold some abrasives that could scratch...

@steveu so it feeds in from the breech end and out through the muzzle?

I never shoot black powder in my 50-70's or 45-70's these days. There is just too much mid range burning smokeless to make a big mess of my minty trapdoor carbine shooting black powder. But when I was a kid and black powder was only $3.50 for a pound of Dupont 2F; that was my go to propellant along with a hand lubed cast boolit out of an old 400 gr Lyman mould. My $35 sporterized Trapdoor Springfield saw plenty of my hillbilly handloads. Had a 3" piece of steel rod with a small hole drilled through it and a piece of masonry twine tied to it. The other end I used a soft cotton bore mop soaked in soapy water. After a dozen rounds I would drop the small steel rod with the string through my fouled bore and pull the wet bore mop through the barrel. I was good for another dozen rounds till the bore fouled up again.

The only reason I can see for using a flexible rod from the breech is wiping between shots. For normal cleaning I have been using a bore guide on the muzzle since the 70's.

Some info on rods here https://castboolits.gunloads.com/sho...h-cleaning-etc

TD's were designed to be easily dissembled for cleaning BP fouling. Very few fireams are as easily taken down for cleaning as the TP's.
