I have located a spent historic cartridge stamped with "REM UMC 25 30". I am unable to find anything on specifically "25 30". Is this a specialty cartridge? What is the history of this?

Cartridges of the World, 16th Edition does not list a .25-30. There is a listing for a .25-36 Marlin and a .25-303 but the .25-30 does not appear. I also looked it up in Cartridges of the World 3rd Edition, but no mention of a .25-30. Good luck on your search!

According to W.R.A.Co. Headstamped Cartridges and Their Variations, Vol.1 by Daniel L. Shuey, there was an experimental cartridge developed by Winchester in the 1890s for single shot rifles that carried the headstamp .25-30. This one apparently never made it into general production, but loaded cartridges are known to exist.
