🤔 What about 'gutting' an RCBS PRO-MELT 2?

remember, it's over 100° heat index in Houston, and I'm bored

I've been into the guts of my Pro-Melt 1 (original, the first version) several times. Replaced the switch, and so on.

What if a person were to go into the Model 2 and remove the PID? Put it in a separate case and just run wires to the attachment points in the pot itself?

yes, the warranty is out the window and it would make for a bigger footprint on the bench, but it might be a way to keep it from overheating.

    just spit-balling here.

90 to 100 for most of August, 80's the last week, tonight it was down to 56. I put on a jacket and was actually thinking of building a fire in the stove. I didn't the jacket was enough, thank the Lord.

While I haven't seen a Promelt2 in person, separating the PID from the heat sounds like a good idea to me. Make sure you use heavy enough wires and make good connections.

    First thought:
The wires on the TC [thermocouple] may not be long enough. The signal the TC creates can be effected by extra connections or the wrong wire, so you might need to buy a new one with proper length cable.

    Second thought:
If you need to monkey with the TC, it may be best to relocate it. I don't have a promelt2, but I've heard they put the TC in a poor location, so temp readings can be 50 to 100 degrees off, compared to the temp of the alloy going through the pour spout.

I think you discovered the problem with the 2. About all PID's say to put them in an enclosure that at the ambient temp. I service a few pieces of commercial kitchen equipment that use PID's for temp control. All have a vented enclosure isolated from heat build up. I got an electronics recycle business in town. They let me dig through the stuff they have. I get the enclosure I need and return all guts I don't need. Aluminum is a great heat sink for the relay. Power supplies usually have power receptacles built in. Easy.
