    Lyman 427098 in 44 Special.

    Good day all,

I was looking at my Lyman 50th manual and saw data for mold 427098 listed for 44 Special. This mold, I thought was reserved for 44-40. Has any one run this round in 44 special? I tend to like the lighter bullets in 38/357, I figured 44 Special would be similar. What diameter does your mold usually give you?

    Thank you!

    Hi,
My lyman mould was dropping .429 diameter boolits and was too small for my .44 special, but it does work well in my 44-40 rifle.

The one I had cast just under .429 and was way too small for my 44 Specials EXCEPT my S&W 544, which has dual cylinders, the original 44-40 and a custom 44 Special. It worked well in that one. Sadly, I lent it to a friend who up and died and I was not able to recover it from his heirs.

That’s one bullet I never had any luck using.
I don’t recall the exact “as-cast” diameter, but using them unsized or sized to a couple diameters, it seemed to be pretty mediocre, even just at 20-25 yds.
    50 yds? Forget it!

Then again, all the guns I tried it with tended to prefer .431-433” bullets.

I have 2 of the 42798 molds same as the 427098. One drops at 427, the other at. 428. Both way too small for the .44 Spl. Better slug your bore and go according.
