I have always wanted a #3 S&W top break Schofield in 45 S&W caliber but the 45 Colt is what I see advertised now. I see several different manufacturers offering them. Taylors, Cimmaron, and Uberti. Is there a disparity in the quality of these guns and if so, which one to avoid.

Any problems with them? A while back, my son and I were at the Cabelas store in Huntsville, Al store and they had a new Uberti revolver that was locked up. That experience made me shy of Uberti's but I have heard a lot of people like them. I have read that some of them have quite a bit of end shake on the cylinder and getting one serviced by the factory is a nightmare.

Schofield with American Holly Grips.jpg My Schofield is an Uberti/Cimarron chambered in 38 special. It took a little bit of time to get used to, but it's always fun to shoot. Fit and finish is top notch and zero problems.

Usually when someone goes so far as to be investigating, they have their mind made up, and I don't want to dissuade you from buying one if that is your desire. However, since you did ask for opinions, I'll share that I did own one that I purchased new, a Uberti. Oh... and there's no real difference, Uberti makes them all. Anyway, I was interested in the historical aspect of the Schofield, the story of its purchase by the US Military, shorter cartridge, different locking mechanism, etc. All very true, but I bought mine in .44-40 WCF. I found it to be very accurate, but very clumsy to operate. It lacks the feel and balance of the 1873 Colt and when the periodic urge to fire some handguns would arise I found myself avoiding it, so I sent it off to find a more appreciative home. As they say, "Your mileage may vary."

Actually I don't have my mind made up right now but I do know that 99% of the responses here will be the result of true experiences with these guns. I have that dreaded law named after us Murphy's so the research will ( I hope) keep me from buying a boat anchor.

There's a few westerns I've watched where they made promonate use of those, and it made me wanna run right out and get one. I've got a small love affair with top-break Smiths, but I've only got two very nice DA's, both S&W in 32 and 38. Still kicking myself for passing up a 44 that was well within my means. jd

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, this revolver is a different breed of fish, but it has style.
There are several variations to choose from. I think Uberti makes them in either 38 Special or 45 Colt calibers. There are also the American and Schofield versions. And there are a couple of barrel lengths.

These guns have the profile that lends them to scream "Cavalry is coming". Ejecting the empties looks like a breeze but reloading on a galloping horse....well, let's say that takes a lot of practice.

Reloading on a galloping horse is going be an adventure regardless of revolver, pistol, shotgun or rifle. It is going to take practice. my .02 anyway, james
