MP Mold 430 grain Wad Slug

I tried searching several times, but I can’t find any pre-existing thread on this slug. Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it pretty accurate? I know it’s just a downsized version of the Lyman Sabot; so is it like the Lee 7/8 being better than the Lee 1 ounce slug?

My purposes would be just for plinking. I like the idea of using less lead.

I picked one up from this current run, but haven't played with it too much. Mine are dropping 425 grains with range scrap.

All I know is that subbing it for a fairly warm Lee 1oz load lead to totally destroyed wad petals.

Ok, finally got some time tonight and managed to get 19 passable slugs before it got too dark. I’m trying to upload a picture, but I’m having problems.

Anyway, I need to work out my starting loads. I have Winchester AA HS hulls and the cheaply Federal Top Gun plastic hulls. I have Downrange DRHF3 which is the equivalent of Federal 12S3 and I have Claybuster CB1138-12 which is the equivalent of Winchester WAA12R.

For powder, I have Clays, International Clays, Longshot, some Blue Dot, IMR 800x, Hodgdon Perfect Pattern, Green Dot, and Red Dot.

Well, I was wrong, I have Universal Clays, which looks like a good thing.

Reviewing the Lee 1 oz keyhole loading data, I can use a Federal Gold Metal hull with a Federal 12S3 wad and 28 grains of Hodgdon Universal. I’m gonna have to substitute a Cheddite primer though, and Federal Top Gun plastic hulls. I’ll report back what happens.

I have this mold and it drops perfect slugs just about from the first one. I load these into my standard Trap Loads. AA hulls, 18 gr of Green Dot, Claybuster Blue Slug Wad and a Cheddite Primer. Fold Crimp only !!!

Do fill the cavity in the back with hot glue so the Wad doesn't get stuffed in the base. This will seriously degrade accuracy if not addressed.

I have gotten very good results with a Rifled Choke Tube ( MonkeyBerg), and my Fully Rifled Barrel. (AutoBerg) at 25 and 50 yards and these slugs with the Flat Nose are devastating to anything they hit. Mine have killed many Dirt Clods at several different Ranges.

Mine are Running @1200 FPS and I will confirm that with my Garmin Chrono as soon as I get a chance.

No need to over complicate this by trying to run these at Warp Speeds. 1200-1300 fps is plenty fast enough to do anything you would ever want to do with a slug like this. Same with Lee Slugs.

First two targets were shot at 25 yards on a Very foggy day. Second two were shot at 50 yards "Off Hand" at Front Sight with my Vang Comped 20" M500. So they work well in Smoothbore Barrels as well.

I'm delighted to see this thread. I have been casting now for about 15 years, but never ventured into shotgun reloading. I've been looking off and on into getting an MP slug mold, not sure which one to go with. I just want something that will shoot decent up to 25 or 50 yards so I can do some plinking with my Benelli M1. Does anyone recommend the full bore vs the wad slug? What is more straightforward to load and shoot? I'm not looking to get creative, or do a lot of tweaking, I'm just interested in getting a safe, reliable recipe that will get me shooting my shotgun again with minimum extra expense. Most of my lead stock is smelted from old plumbing and very soft. If it's possible to just load full bore slugs with a cardboard wad, that would be better, but I don't know if it's possible.

Mr. Buchanan, thank you for the recipe and the range report! I bought a rifled choke just for increasing my accuracy of shooting slugs. Im definitely not chasing Mach speeds, just something I can shoot in a three gun match if I ever decide to compete, and for the occasional destruction of a bad watermelon or squash, or for a November pumpkin that didn’t carved in October!

Castloader: the 525 grain wad pellet is a much more popular slug, and it has a lot of published recipes. I went with 430 grain version to hopefully reduce recoil and to try something different.

I picked up the Russian version of the Lyman wad slug, which comes with 4 core pins, so you can get 4 different weight slugs. The lightest is in this ballpark, and it works well. As Randy mentioned, avoid the temptation to push them too fast, and you'll have terrific accuracy out of a smooth or rifled bore. I'd agree that this also goes for Lee slugs and .690 RB. Keep the velocities down to levels the wads are made for and you'll be fine; try to push them to 1600 fps and all kinds of things will go wrong. This also eliminates the need to fill the cavities, in my experience. That seems like a hassle if you want to shoot high volume, but I suppose it does help a little if ultimate accuracy is your goal. If you do feel the need to push the velocities, then filling the cavities becomes much more important to keep the wad from pushing up in there.

Does anyone have any load data for this slug using BlueDot? Winchester hulls and wads.
