Looks like I have some good options.Between unique and red dot.
No need to load 18/Unique under a 300 grain boolit. My load is 12.5/Unique under a 340 for about 1150fps from my rifles. I use this load for gong shoots and lever action silhouette in my 1886 Browning. A friend of mine loads 10/bullseye under the Lyman 457191 for about 1100fps. Bullseye, red dot, green dot, unique and a number of other similar powders will produce accurate low recoil loads. As mentioned you probable need to search older manuals for data as the newer ones don't have any, likely due to their lawyers fearing someone will double charge a case and then sue them instead of taking responsibility for their own personal carelessness. GMDR lever gun performance studies has a lot of data also.
Take a look at the GMDRlever site. Good reading for reduced loads. Lots of data for 45/70 with unique and many more powders. These loads have been shot thousands of times. A 405 gr boolit cruising along at 900 to 1000 fps is devistating on deer.
Never trade luck for skill.
on that site..looks like 8-12gr unique for 300gr
anyone have links to a red dot recipe? thanks
( I see they have green dot too )
I load a cast 405gr. rf with 12 gr. of Bullseye for about 1200fps out of my Henry steel 45/70. Fun to shoot and very accurate.
You can download Gordon’s Reloading Tool for free.
It’s kind of like Quickloads but not as many choices for powder and bullets.
I’m sure you could run a load through there and find something with Red Dot.
Soundguy my shooting/match partner and I have loaded untold numbers of 45-70's with 300-400 grain boolits with Alliant powders from Bullseye to Herco. What we have found is when going to the next slower powder it generally takes about .25 to.5 grain more powder to produce the same velocity. Fastest to slowest- Bullseye, Red Dot, Green Dot, Unique, Herco. Hope this helps. Also we shoot long range gong matches with our Sharps single shots with 500-535 grain boolits and and have found 22 grains of 2400 give or take a few tenths to tune to the rifle to be very accurate. Recently during practice I fired a 6" 5 shot group at 400 yards from my Shiloh Sharps with the 2400 load under a 510 grain semi spitzer.
ahh..2400.. so very limited supplies these days.. for alluant powders..I probably have red dot and unique in best supply.. just under 11# of each..next is bullseye..with under5#.. everything else is just 1-3 pounds.. I was never really an alliant shooter ..accurate..imr, hodgdon..some western stuff..etc.. so my alliant supies aren't as extensive as my hodgdons ... but with that unique and red dot..I should have some room to work up loads.
Are these loads with or without a Dacron filler?
gmsharps
With the faster burning powders [Bullseye through Unique] I don't use nor recommend the use of a dacron or any other filler. With slower powders [2400 through 4759] when using 350+ gr cast bullets I use a dacron filler.

im not a huge fan of fillers.
15 gr Unique under a 300 gr is an accurate pleasant to shoot load.
Nice. Now I need to come up with a good red dot load that is tame..yet useable on 300gr
