need to be under 850fps, I am usng trailboss at 5.6 in my contender 10" and it is dead on. I have tried 5.4-6.0 in the Smith and cant dial it in, may need to try a different powder/ bullet?

Back in the day, I loaded Herco for the 8" DW M44 I used six-gun bowling pin matches. Under a 225 gr. TC, virtually duplicated accuracy and ballistics of G.I. Ball .45 ACP. Could be wrong but I believe a buddy still shoots that same load in a 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk.

    >< 6 grains of Vihtavuori N320_
(I use a fluff of dacron to keep the powder near the inner flash hole, but only because I'm slightly ocd)_

Just remember that higher velocity/lighter bullet usually achieves lower impact. And vice-versa for higher impact. jd
It seems that people who do almost nothing, often complain loudly when it's time to do it.

I use 7 grains of Unique and a 220 grain, average weight with my alloy and lubed, RF bullet (ACCURATE 43-215CB) in my M-69 4". It chronographs an average of 844fps so I suppose it might go somewhat faster in an 8 3/8" barrel. However, in the 69 it is very pleasant to shoot. In my 629 I use 10 grains of Unique with a 250 grain Keith style bullet so I suspect 10 grains may be well past your velocity goal.

As a side note, my 629 refuses to shoot any of the 215-225 bullets with any degree of accuracy. I have tried dozens of different loads to no avail, so I just go with the Keith bullet.

I have been loading 4.5-5.5 grains of tite group, after trying many other loads. That is the most accurate combination I have come up with at that bullet weight, I used 5.5 grains in a .44 special case with 215 grain HBWC, and 4.5 grains in .44 mag cases with 250 swc, those loads have shot better than anything else Ive tried in Model 24-3 and 629-4. Ive been testing toads weekly all summer. Testing at 35 and 50 yds

I've always had great luck with the old Lyman 429215 gc. Never loaded light loads in magnum brass, but in my old 1950 Target 44 special I used 8gr of Unique a lot. Off of bags it would stay on a standard 100yd rifle target at 100. For target use closer, think about 4.5 to 5gr of Bullseye. Look for one ragged hole at 25yd and under.

My 4" 629 is a 1980,pinned and recessed cylinder. As such it's a wee bit too valuable to beat on it with heavy loads. Got a few 215g moulds. The Lyman 429215 GC and load to mid range velocity with IMR PB. But that rig does best with jacketed 180's,having killed quite a few deer.

any 200gr/220gr bullet and 6.0gr to 6.5gr loads using clays powder. That combo flat out shoots in my 629.

Appreciate the posts, some of the powders listed are not available right now, I have the 429215 mold and I have a Keith 255 and a lyman 240 I can try, the 8 3/8 barrel is the issue im seeing, I will try the bullseye and TG on the heavier bullet to see if it works, thx again. * have to stay under 260grs and 850 fps for the matches we shoot*
